I think its the scratch/grind noise right before the exhaust gets loud enough to drown it out. Sounds similar to a worn wheel bearing.

Does it make the sound at a higher speed when you know the torque converter should be locked?

Thank you for checking for me, this does help me get a better understanding of if it is normal or not!

Well, I guess light is subjective. It's a quick light throttle I guess. Make it jump 1k RMP about.

That's exactly right! I can only reproduce it at lower speeds or while coasting, I believe under 40MPH. I'll have to listen harder above 40MPH. It also makes a scratch/chirp noise that might be the same thing just making different sounds - not sure.

I can hear the grind when I suddenly hit the gas pedal.
I hadn't tried it in park or neutral while stopped in a long time. So, I took a video for you of it stopped in N/P, both outside and inside. You'll hear the chirp/screech way more than a grind, but they might even be the same thing. Sounds very bad. =(

The chirp sounds like the throttle body which I think should be normal. That's usually the initial woosh of air going in when the throttle opens. I don't own one so someone else can chime in.

I don't think the grinding noise is normal though.

I'll research the throttle body and see if I think it's part of my situation. Thanks!

Mine does it too. Exactly the same thing at the same time. Thats why i looked this up. I figured it was something to do with Active Fuel Management. Also ive checked the oil and its good. It sounds like a normal thing for the A8

This sounds like a noisy actuator to me. I am unsure which actuator it could be. I would guess it is an actuator related to the variable valve timing, throttle body, or possibly the AFM. Source: I work for an actuator supplier... but we don't have actuators on the Camaro.

Does the car always make this sound? Is there any change in driving behavior or method that you can do where the sound will not happen?

mine doesn't make the grinding noise and I drive it slow/fast in auto and with the paddles all the time. If there is another dealer around, it may be worth taking it in to talk to them to see what they say.

My car does this too, but only on light throttle going up an incline in a parking garage, and only after I abruptly let the throttle go. I think this might be an AFM/NPP valve opening/closing thing. and it's not a grinding noise, it's like a metal clank or clink sound. right?

It doesn't happen when I'm going at higher speeds or shifting through higher gears. Mainly in cases that are displayed in the video only. It could be that I just can't hear it in those other cases though.

Oh yeah, I will be doing that depending on what GM tells my attorney (still waiting, 60 days now...)

The metal clank or clink occurs on my car too, but is not the same sound as the grinding. The metal sound I hear is in videos I have, but it happens when switching from V8 to V4, and when giving it gas hard in any low gear from a slower speed.

Sorry to bump an old thread. But have you ran into any issues yet? My car has exactly what you described.

There are 2 valves on the automatic\NPP systems. The clinking sound might be a rattle in those valves which I've read people have had (usually it's the NPP valve). The sound when you tap the gas while in V4 to me sounds more like a suction from the pressure build up while the AFM valve is closed. It's probably the most annoying thing about my car.

My 2020 SS 1LE is making the same exact sound, except louder and more annoying. Did you ever figure out what causes this? My service dept/service advisors keep telling me it's normal but mine didn't start doing it until 6500 miles and it makes the car sound like shit

I had so many issues it's hard to remember which this might have been, but there was a lot of transmission problems and they tried to replace the transmission once. It ended up in the shop for so long and nothing was fixing things that I had the car replaced through the lemon law.
