A8 Competition Mode
If you haven't tried it yet, you need to - now THAT is how an automatic is supposed to shift! Quick downshifts with rev match are bad ass, no way a manual can match that speed (up or down)
Best morning commute I've ever had, this car is awesome |

It's on another thread.
Try this - track mode with competitive selected.
Leave in D - punch down hard a few times on the gas pedal. It will then select performance shifter mode automatically. It will aggressively down shift and up shift. Enjoy the ride.

Unfortunately, I see a auto vs manual thread coming since you just basically called out the manual folks.
But before that happens.... Was you in manual mode or auto? I found out that if you are in manual mode and hold down on the shift down button continuously, it will then shift down automatically into the lowest gear possible. Pretty cool for those times you might be cruising along on the highway, and then want to nail it. But I haven't gotten to try the performance shifting in track mode yet. I want to do that very much! Do I just put it in track mode and then punch the gas to the floor a couple times, or what?

Is competition mode only accessible when the car is in Track Mode, or can you get it while in other modes?

Sport or Track - just double tap the traction control button and pops up on the main screen, no need to punch down on gas pedal etc
I left it in drive/auto mode - terrified a few ricers - huge fun |

You can pull the paddle shifter up a gear to exit or drive calmly for ~8s or more and it'll exit. Driving this car, at least the A8 versions, around in Tour mode you'll feel it's a wee sluggish to shift, loosely steered and the throttle map is very averaged out. It's a much more responsive car in S and then again in Tr. Though, unless you manually change your steering, you'll find that Tr mode a slow/stopped wheel input will be a decent amount of effort if you're used to Tour. I actually tinker with various custom modes.. Like, you have have Sport MRC, with Tour Steering and have it in Track mode for the rest. It doesn't beat you to death, it has light input, but the throttle and shifting are much more in line with what I like. However, just know that PSM will kick in sometimes when you don't want it.. and you'll have a high RPM revving engine that seems stalled here for a bit unless you manually exit it. |

If you want performance shifter mode right away when your cruising at any speed you do have to stomp on the gas pedal to get it right away. Or, you have to start driving aggressively and it will kick in at some point.

I notice you have to be above 40mph for it to work.

I know comp mode is entered with a dbl tap of the TCS button. But I thought that perf shift mode was only entered with assertive driving and it will exit after a bit on its own if you slow up. We've got two different modes in play here in the thread. Making sure I'm replying to the right ones as they're different modes. |

I accidentally came across it when in Track Mode. Have not been able to duplicate in Sport Mode. I did not have Competitive Mode on at that time as I didn't know it existed yet.
The DIC will display "Performance Shift Active" when this additional item is triggered. From there, your RPM's will not drop below 3k. I can see where finding a way to trigger this in advance would be useful for track days in the A8. Really helps you power through a corner when I did accidentally trigger it. GM should just make a video tutorial on all these features and how to activate them. It is like a new easter egg I find each time I play with it. |

It's called out on Pg 210 in the owner's manual.
"Performance Shifting While driving in Sport Mode (V6), or Sport Mode and Track Mode (V8), if Tap Shift has not been activated, the transmission determines when the vehicle is being driven in a competitive manner. The transmission may remain in a gear longer than it would in the normal driving mode based on throttle input and vehicle lateral acceleration. If there is a rapid reduction in throttle from a heavy throttle position at high rpm, the transmission will maintain the current gear up to near redline rpm. While braking, the transmission will automatically downshift to the next lower gear keeping engine speed above approximately 3000 rpm. If the vehicle is then driven for a short time at a steady speed, and without high cornering loads, the transmission will upshift one gear at a time, until 8 (Eighth) gear. After shifting to 8 (Eighth) gear, or coming to a complete stop, the transmission will return to normal Sport Mode shifting." |
