Tire Replacement
Yesterday I noticed I had a tire at 27 psi after getting my car washed. I rode it into the dealership thinking it was probably in need of a plug since all 4 tires were at 35 psi leaving my home.
I was informed that because the nail was near the sidewall, I would have to have it replaced. They did not have a 275/35 ZR20 98Y Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymentry 3 in stock, so they would have to get one shipped to them from somewhere......however they wanted to charge me $389 for it, like they had it in stock. Well I found some tires at a Goodyear Store, Identical as the one listed above for $229. The only problem was that they were not actually at the goodyear store, so I could not get them price matched. In the end they charged me $345 for the tire, $20 to install it, and $20 in "miscellaneous" shop supplies, tire fees. Does this sound about par for the course? The dealership was really nice, and courteous, I understood that its a odd-ball tire and it takes time to get them in, just wondering if that misc. shop supplies charge is common practice. Also, knowing that this size tire is never really in stock anywhere for a decent price, what is someone's opinion on purchasing a set to have ready for the next flat? I could get a full set of OEM for $860 vs $1400. Or is there another good run-flat tire that is cheaper? |

$385 total seems pretty fair for replacing a stock tire with the same, labor included. I had a flat last month, it prompted me to make sure I have a full set at the ready. Never a bad idea to have backups.

The majority of the time when you pick up a nail it Is going to be in the tread, and then you can internally patch a runflat. It won't be very often that you catch it right on the edge where you can't use a patch. I certainly would be not buying extra tires because I was worried about that. This would patch fine:
