Agreed. It normally wouldn't be lower, if anything it would be higher like 3.91 as it was in the last 1LE, but then they could change the ratio of all the gears to suit the track.

That was the big discussion with the G5 1LE vs the SS. 1/4 mi times for the SS tended to be slightly better since they did not need to shift into 4th where as the LE gear ratios required that extra shift. However, at the track the 1LE gear ratios kept you in the sweet spot for power. It sounds like they are going to keep the 3.73 rear but I wonder if we will see it paired to slightly different gear ratios that are optimized for track use.

Odd review.

I've driven both transmissions in the SS many times, they are both fantastic. But, in my opinion, coming from a racing background as well, the manual has more of a kick in the pants feel overall, as in most cases the A8 will upshift too soon. Much of how torque is perceived is a personal thing though.

But, remember the manual will have less torque loss through the drivetrain...

The SS has the same transmission gear ratios as the 5th gen 1LE. But they did make improvements to it internally.

The SS 1LE will have the same transmission, although I thought I read with a short throw shifter, but I can't remember where I saw that...

That's what I thought. I kept thinking "Didn't my 97 Z/28 6-speed have 3.42's?"

No problem. I'm curious to see how the car will feel. I might opt to raise the rear axle ratio slightly. For the life of me I wish they would lose the 2 overdrive gears in favor of just one. Even if the change from 5th to 6th is a larger drop in RPM. It would be nice to have 4 usable gears on track as opposed to just 2nd, 3rd, 4th. I'm sure 5th will rarely be used except on the back stretch at Road Atlanta.

Why does it feel different? Because you don't know how to drive a manual effectively. If you did, you wouldn't be asking this rookie question. Take some high performance driving classes. I took classes from the Bob Bondurant school at Sears Point Raceway way back in the eighties. The best car related investment I ever made.
