Gen6 M6 Shift Knob removal W/pics
Hi guys,
I removed the console but you won't have to IF you figure out a way to release the "finger" by the parking brake switch. Once released, lift the chrome boot bezel up starting at the back 'cause there are 2 tabs at the very front which slide back once the bezel is free. If you just try to pry the bezel straight up you'll probably snap the "finger" & the tabs off. There IS a #25 Torx screw holding the knob on the shaft. There's NO TWISTING (chrome plastic ring & black plastic boot rings are keyed on a slot in the shaft). After the screw is out pull DOWN the chrome ring as shown (but if you use a screwdriver you will nick the soft plastic). That releases 2 plastic fingers & the boot retaining ring will slide off. (Chrome ring will remain on knob unless you compress the remaining clips to slide it off) There IS a phillips screw at the tippy-top holding the emblem on if all you wanna do is swap emblems. To remove console: Lift knee bolsters STRAIGHT UP & remove the 2 10mm bolts (each side) Move seats forward & pop 2 plastic bolt covers to gain access to remaining bolts. I would put these caps aside as thay seemed to fall off easily, & I almost started bolting up the console when I realized one was missing & yeah--it was under the console. Be sure to tuck the carpet in nicely on the sides as you push the console back in place. Hope this helps! (NO-those aren't scracthes in the plastic--just a mixture of dog & cat hair. YES-I installed the "smokers kit" last week--it won't be used, just did it to be retro & have a place to put change. 2nd APO for "RoadHawk" front camera gifted to me 2 years ago is HERE & wired to red/white battery lead HERE) |

Sooo... basically it's a huge pain in the ass to swap shifter knobs?

I really like the stock shifter knob. I guess coming from a 99 vette, where I had to mod so many things, this car is setup pretty well from the factory.

I am trying to diagnose a noise coming from my shifter, does the boot attach to the console? I have an auto and when I lift it up it feels like it tugs on the boot. Is that remedied by pulling off the center bezel surrounding the shifter first?

OP, thanks for sharing this. I'm thinking of getting a new knob for mine.
Quick question - The "finger" that holds the chrome boot bezel in place, do you need to push it towards the front of the car or pull towards the rear to release it? Edit: found that it's "push towards the front" in the Hurst instructions pdf

Wow, all this just to remove a knob? What happened to a simple threaded knob?

This is great info as I plan to swap to the 1LE knob, boot, and steering wheel when they become available.

Wow that's what i'm saying. Last Manual I had was a jeep. I literally just twisted it off and twisted on another one. I thought about doing this, but I know i'm not going to go through all that just to swap out a shift knob.

I'll see if I can die the shaft... not sure why manufacturers go with these elaborate knob fastening systems :/
