Why do people like waze so much? I've never used it but after downloading the app it looks like Google maps plus telling you where cops are. Frankly all other information it provides looks like a distraction.
What am I missing? If I just want an app that gets me to my destination in the quickest time possible is there an advantage to waze over Google maps

No, there isn't an advantage for Waze over Google Maps for what you want. In fact, Google owns Waze and incorporates Waze user reported traffic data into Google Maps.

The advantages of Waze are the things you don't want--the alerts.

Personally I like Waze and use it, but that's just my preference.

I also just found out how to get traffic updates on my stock navi, so I'll be using that.

Waze is better for big city driving IMO. Although, myself I have noticed Waze takes me around traffic jams and Google maps never has. I have even tried adjusting my settings in Google Maps.

Google maps on AA will re-route you. I was driving down to the Jersey Shore 2 weekends ago and it re-routed me around a accident.

Exactly! LOVE the way Waze is constantly looking ahead for a faster way. I commute from STL to Detroit at least once a month and Waze has saved my A$$ several times - both by identifying police traps and by bypassing traffic jams - neither of which Google Maps seems to be able to do.

let's be honest that is why it is better than anything else.

also you can live chat with drivers around you which is great for traffic jams when you are just sitting there trying to figure out what is going on.

It has saved me from multiple speeding tickets since it tells you where the cops are(depending on people reporting them) among other useful alerts.

Thats cool. This Article was put out in May. I hope they release soon. says a few months and we are there now.

waze also tells you what time your friends will arrive if you are heading to the same location and both using the app. I was meeting my wife for lunch and then it told me my son was also 5 min out and showed me the way he was coming. It also to me seems to do a much better job finding the faster route over google maps.
