Not impressed with brake performance

Im talking for DD use, am I alone here?

Dont remember feeling like this in my 5th gen.

Sometimes it just seems like im not sure if the car is going to stop in time when someone in front of me slows down quickly, havent had to really SLAM on the brakes, but the brakes in my 4runner seem to stop a lot better.

Will different pads make an improvment or do I need to upgrade to 6 piston?

Pads and fluid may make a difference. I think the consensus is the feel and initial bite of the brakes is somewhat spongy, but actual braking performance when you apply firm pressure is very good. The 6 pistons will help with brake fade on a race track rather than emergency stopping performance.

I think there are some positive reviews for brake pedal feel when changing pads, so I would give that a go first. http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=454406

60-0 braking performance of the SS is 117 ft, there's nothing wrong with the stock brakes. Yes, it has a different feel than the Gen 5 but they stop just fine.

Push harder! I had the same complaint when I first got the car. I learned that these cars just like a little more pressure on the pedal. When you start giving the brakes the business, they won't disappoint.

We won speed stop in a USCA Event on STOCK 4 Piston SS brakes, in our 2016. Trust me, the brakes are strong. If you decide you DO need more, you can change to Wilwood or Hawk Pads or we have a killer JDP Spec Big Brake Package.

All the best,

The initial bite feeling has to do with pad compound and rotor size. I know the 5th Gen SS had more street friendly pads and the 6th Gen seems to have a pad compromised a little more towards track performance. So, there is likely a loss in low temp (relative to the brake surface) bite. Also, I've noticed many of the "upgrade" brake options (15"/16" on the pony cars) seem to produce a slightly more grabby feel initially (larger lever arm).

As many said before, different brake pads will give you better stopping power.
Down the road stainless steel brake lines will help as well.

I wasn't impressed by them when I got my car so I went big, 8 piston fronts with 16" rotors. Now it stops real good.

Mine are great, not as good as my 99 vet that was set up for road course or my g8gt after I converted it to Ctsv package. Still they get the job done very well.

I would also suggest you go through the process of bedding in the brakes if you haven't already. That helped mine quite a bit.

I have the 6 piston package and I love the initial bite feel and modulation. With that said, the 4 piston setup is pretty amazing and hauls the car down from 60 in under 110 feet (according to most tests)... if everything is working as it should. They're in a completely different league compared to your 4runner, like 20 feet shorter from 60 different league - that's actually a whole 'nother ball game across town distance. Two things; the brakes aren't as overboosted as on most modern cars (especially some random family car) and bed the pads.

You all realize that braking distance is as much a function of tire compound as brake clamping force, right?

If the 4 pot calipers are maintaining the braking at the limits of the ABS then going to 6 or 8 pot brakes isn't going to reduce the stopping distance.

Remember, once you have reached the tires limits of adhesion the brake have done their job. Any addition clamping force is moot.

What the big brake conversions give you is different, usually better modulation and resistance to fade. Something that's important on the track, not so much on the street.
