Noob here. 1st oil change sample to Blackstone

Greetings! I'm a new buyer. I have been reading this forum so as not to get labeled "lazy" when I ask a question!

I will attempt to answer the question of the "first oil change." I changed my oil at 863 miles and sent a sample to Blackstone Labs. This will at the very least give me a baseline to record and may or may not show metals from the manufacturing process or other undesirables. I will post the results when I receive them.

I have a lot of experience with Blackstone as I have my engine oil evaluated periodically on my F-250 to check for vegetable leaking past the rings and contaminating the engine oil.

Anyway, love my new car! I know, it's the "low" model. One day I will get the V8 but for now, I have not seen any prettier! I have heavily modded my truck so I am looking forward to reading about mods for the Camaro.

Black stone will tell you you could have driven another 14000 miles , is my guess, or close to it.

No that's not how it works. It gives you a report of all metals and fluids such as coolant or fuel in the oil.

Of course I know I could've gone 5,000 miles. I had a free oil change coupon and I like to use Blackstone for my other vehicle.

Thanks for the helpful sarcasm though!

I've done it several times , I was not being sarcastic.
usually in the comment section it tells you how many more miles you could go safely. And every time I have done it ,it says I can go many many more miles than I ever would. Oils are just that good today.

I STILL don't know why people do this, Just say that the report comes back saying that there is to much Blah,Blah in the oil. What action are You going to take? You can BET that the Dealer won't do anything, and I doubt GM will do anything. The other thing that I don't understand is why people insist on changing their oil at 500,1000 or even at 2000 miles. These are the same people that won't Rev their engine over 3500RPMtill is got 1501 Miles on it cause its not broken in. I'm OLD school, But I think to many people believe EVERYTHING they read, and use NO common sense!!! OK Let the HATE Mail begin!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!

Well, the manufacturer of the vehicle states the break in requirements. Are you saying they put it in there to f.CK with people?
Furthermore, even if they did do that to F.CK with people, you are calling out the people as fools for following the manufacturers requirements? Not cool bro.

Yep... That's me; no common sense. My ignorance leads me to believe if any new metal surfaces have the slightest imperfections some metal shavings will end up in the oil pan. Some threads here have shown the magnetic plug with small metal particles. But I'm even worse; I changed the rear end oil for the same reason... What a waste of good fluid.
Each to his own...

OP, if you're just driving the car as a daily or a weekend car it probably isn't going to do much for you. However if you're tracking it or really ringing it out it can really help. See my comments below.

In the two years I owned my ZL1 I put over 1,500 hard track miles on the car (among street driven miles), I would have a report done every 3,000-5,000 miles (depending on number of track days). It is a very useful tool aside from mineral wear, you can see the SUS Viscosity, cSt Viscosity, and Flashpoint, it gives you a good idea if the oil is thinning out or sheering under high stress / temps. One track event my oil went over 300*F for an extended period of time, the oil report showed increased wear but nothing too alarming. The next oil report showed less mineral wear, indicating to me that there wasn't major damage done from the oil over heat situation and thinning out the oil.

It can be a very useful tool, but for someone that doesn't run their car hard or it's stock (under warranty and thus the dealers problem) it is probably over doing it.

Let us know if they find any vegetables in the oil you sent them.

My guess is they'll find a turnip.

I'm of the mind the break in requirements are to prevent warranty issues, like a lot of other people in that huge debate thread

There You Go, Jumping down My throat when YOU completely missed the point of My post, I'll try to speak a little slower and set YOU straight! The Lawyers that write the manuals, do so to cover GM's A$$,PERIOD! The point of My OP was to point out that People that remove the 1st oil in the engine (at 500-1500 miles) are doing so BEFORE the engine is "Broken in" I DID NOT call anyone out as a FOOL! PERIOD! Hope this clears the air for YOU! PERIOD!!!! DONE!!!

I've posted this a few times but will do so again for your benefit. I found this chunk of ? stuck to my ZL1's diff magnet when I changed the fluids at 1500 miles. I changed my SS yesterday at 1405 miles and only the fine metallic silt was on the plug. It's just a good idea to clean the early wear and assembly contamination.

I'm going to the drags Sunday

IMO it's better to change it too soon, rather than change it too late.
