just my 2 cents here but the way I see it in my real life test driving all 3 and comparing performance through the major car magazines;
1) Base Camaro SS is about $4k more than a base GT, but a GT would need the $2500 Track Pack option just to get the better brakes and rear gear ratio that the SS come with standard. Bringing that difference down to $1500. Scat Pack Challenger starts just a little higher than a SS. 2) I test drove a Manual GT without track pack and was really disappointed in its seat of the pants performance. My daily driver is a '98 Trans am with all the normal bolt-ons and from a seat of the pants feel my 160kmi Trans Am felt faster. Granted that is not an apples to apples comparison but if I'm going to drop 40k on a new sports/muscle car it better out perform my 18 yer old daily driver. The SS and SRT/Scat Pack I test drove both felt faster and more fun to drive. 3) I think the Camaro design is more polarizing than the Mustang, you either like it or you don't, the Mustang is more of a neutral design while the Challenger is visually much more retro throwback muscle car design. 4) I'm a sucker for that V8 muscle car torque that the Challenger and SS have and the GT just didn't. Don't get me wrong all 3 have fantastic engines, but that high revving 5.0 just wasn't as fun to drive. 5) The SS outperforms the other 2 is just about every category. My conclusion; the Camaro was named MT COTY for a reason and the SS outperforms everything in it's class and some outside it's class at a price that is reasonable compared to its competitors. The decision to buy one over the others should come down to personal preference and how much you value performance/looks/ergonomics. Camaro is top performer across the board, Mustang is the least polarizing looks wise and can be had for less money if you don't need the better performance parts. Challenger is the odd car out weighing 500 pounds more but having a more usable back seat and trunk while still giving great straight line performance and very good handling for a car as big as it is in it's class. I'm sure most of this has been said before but just wanted to give another independent point of view. For what it's worth, if I was a ford salesman I would be sure to have a GT with the Track Pack onsite for test drives because anyone considering between a GT and the other 2 who actually test drives them all will walk away from the GT laughing. Some people are just die hard Ford or Mustang owners and would rather buy it and add on performance mods if they want to beat a Camaro or Challenger. I have always been more of a GM guy but liked Ford also and I was really surprised with how much I liked the "Fat" Challenger and how much I wasn't impressed with the GT. Reading articles and performance numbers dowsn't give you the full picture, go test drive them each yourself and see what best suits you. Last edited by TransAmx2; 06-06-2016 at 12:25 PM. |

I think you just have to keep things realistic. If you want a Mustang, Camaro, and maybe a Challenger (not sure about the backseat size there) you can't also want a family car with good fuel economy. You are just setting yourself up for failure. They aren't built for family vacations.

So, let's talk Challenger for a minute. I assume we can all agree if we are going to compare a Challenger to an Camaro SS we need to start with a Scat Pak? If so, that car is $40k with no options. If you just add an auto trans and leather you are at 43k. Now if you load up a Challenger with the Scat Pak with Shaker hood and some of the tech you get to $48k msrp. Now, it looks cool but this is a lot of scratch for a car that is running on an aging chassis platform due for significant changes. It only goes up from there..SRT392 is 53k.

There is a lot of hand wringing ITT. If they actually start advertising the car with performance metrics compared to competetion, and tout the 'Car of the Year' award, along with a 'Wards top 10 best interior' award, and then do some very small incentives just to have something to advertise to get people in the door, I think you'd see sales be significantly better pretty quick.
Right now there are hardly ANY advertisements and there isn't a general awareness that the car outperforms the Mustang and Challenger significantly. I think you'd see a lot more interest if people didn't have to watch youtube videos and read car magazines to find that out. Also, my local Chevy dealer has shown no follow up interest in making a sale to me. I did a test drive where I was blown away by the card, told the salesperson 'thank you but not ready to buy today', gave him my buisness card and left. I walked over to the dodge dealership, only looked at and sat in a Challenger [car is not for me, I do not care for its looks/size], and thanked the salesperson with a 'not ready to buy a car today', and gave him my card. The Dodge salesman has followed up with me 2 times since then letting me know they have some incentives running and would I be interested to come down and see if we could make a Challenger work. Never once been contacted by the Chevy dealership. They just didn't seem to be TRYING to sell me anything. The salesman at the Chevy dealership basically said something like 'oh these cars sell themselves...'. He didn't know much about any of the products. Basically he's used to people coming down, saying they want a Malibu or a Volt, helping them find the one they want, and then selling it to them. I just don't think Chevy is doing anything to TRY to sell the Camaro. |
