Newb axelback question

I was taking to an exhaust shop and was told the only difference between an axel back and them putting on mufflers and tips is ease of installation. The couple feet of pipe on an axelback don't add power but make it so that an average guy without a welder can install it.
Am I being mislead? It sounds fishy given the claimed performance gains of some of these systems. Does the car really pick up 15hp just from a different muffler and tips.
Sorry for the newb question. I may just have a fundamental misunderstanding of what an axelback is/includes.

No, you're not going to get power from an axleback or if you do, it's going to be negligible at best. They're for weight and sound only. If you want power from exhaust, you'll be looking at cats/headers/resonators, etc up closer to the engine.

They're also not wrong. A kit is designed so we can install them at home by unbolting/bolting in pre-cut and bent pieces w/o the use of a pipe bender or welder. Some cars still need the OEM pipes cut off in some places though.

I can't speak for the quality of work for your local exhaust shop. I've had some that have done amazing jobs that looked OEM. I've also had some that were total garbage and the thing rattled, had exhaust leaks, the welds were poor, etc. The other part of buying a quality kit is that they've been specifically built and tested for this car and they're from, usually, a reputable mfg. That also most of the time will come at a price.

The only thing past your axles are mufflers and maybe a little piping. Same same essentially..
What they're talking about doing is essentially an "axleback" system.
It'll just get you noise depending on mufflers used, not performance gains..

What he said.

I wonder how much the huge stock unit weights? When I see pic of the belly of the car the first thing I think of is "that's got to go!".

Where are you in SoCal and what are they quoting you for the mufflers and tips? What type of muffler and tips?

I'm confused. Is that not what I was saying? I've put on many axle-backs myself and have crawled all under mine. That's why I was pointing out the "they're not wrong" about it not gaining much and it's just sound and some weight depending one your OEM design and the pieces you go with. I've never had any sort of power increase.

I'm in Palm desert the shop is fms.
I'm deciding between borla and MagnaFlow.

I love borla but saw a post where the guy said it isn't noticeably louder in the cabin than npp.

Guess it was the quote that threw me, I couldn't tell if you were replying to OP and quoting me or talking to me.. Anyways, nevermind. It's been a long day at the office and I'm tired and I wanted to make sure I was actually conveying what I thought I was conveying.
