Oil Smell

Has anyone else smelled burning oil inside the car when stopped?
Does this mean I need a catch can? I noticed it first af ter my first oil change at the dealer. They said the tech may have spilled some oil when removing the oil filter. After 500 miles, I still smell it!

Might want to check that your car wasn't part of the recall for the dipstick tube coming loose.

This is totally plausible, especially since you smelled it right after the oil change. Oil can take some time to dissipate in burn off. I doubt it has anything to do with the recall, a spontaneous drop in oil pressure is what happens with that recall.....

Yes, I had mine checked, no raised numbers on oil pan...it's annoying though because that smell reminds me of a POS Sprite I had in High School!

Maybe look to see if you can find the oil spilled and try to clean it off. Brake clean on a good shop rag will help wipe it off. Just give the car some cool down time first.

Really No surprise here! That's one of MANY reasons I change my own oil & filter.
Even when I have Free oil & filter changes, like I now have on my two 2015 cars.

Yes! This also started happening right after my first oil change. When I brought it back in, they said they saw some oil that had been spilled on the exhaust, and they wiped it off. The smell would come back from time to time after that, most of the time, right after getting off a freeway and coming to a stop.

I brought it back a third time and they did a smoke test on the exhaust which came up negative. I'm guessing they didn't clean it as well as mjk3888 suggested, so it still pops up every now and again. I should note that it only gets driven maybe 3 days out of the week, so it may take more time for mine to totally burn off. Since the initial smell, I've probably put about 350 miles on it.

The LT1s will consume oil to a certain degree, just like the LS engine in my last car did. Up until recently, I would say that I was consuming a quart every 2500 or so miles, though that rate seems to have slowed down a bit lately. I would sometimes smell it after doing some "spirited" driving.

I also smelled some after adding oil a couple of weeks ago, and then driving it to work two days in a row without replacing the fill cap (oops). I lucked out on that one, and the cap fell from where I had set it atop the radiator cowling down the side and wedged itself into a tight spot, where it rode out the next couple of hundred miles.

my SS doesn't consume hardly any oil. 3500 miles on the oil and it still had all 10quarts in the system when I changed it Saturday. I ended up with the same issue, could smell oil burning smell through the vents. The oil filter placement makes it pretty difficult for oil not to travel different places once you remove it. The smell should go away after a while.

No oil consumption that i can detect so far. i'm only at 4k miles though.

I'd vote spilled oil regarding the OP's issue. Give it some more time, checking the level every so often.

Yep. My dealer has a drive on lift for oil changes but still won’t let them touch it. They spilled a bunch all over the engine on my wife’s Malibu.

Check the passenger side of the oil pan where the level sensor comes thru the oil pan. It's an o-ring seal, my '16 SS leaked there after I brought it in for the transmission cooler line recall. After a fresh oil change it was difficult to see, but as the oil got a little darker it was easier to spot where it was coming from. It was only noticeable when coming to a stop.

I have had the same issue with my car. The first week I had the car driving to work one morning I smelled what I thought was a petroleum based smell in the car. The first thing I thought of was “oh great some of that adhesive they use all over the car is in the dash “. I was running the heat. But it only lasted a few minutes and was gone. I have smelled it a few other times over the 4500 plus miles I have now even without the heater. Never lasts more than a minute or two. It is a mystery. I will check for oil leakage though.

I had this for over 3000 miles before it inexplicably went away. Never did find a source, no puddles, no nothing. Had to the dealer 2x and they were clueless too. I have to change my oil this week so once I get it on jacks again I'll have another look around and hopefully it doesn't come back again.
