Having fun with paddle shifts on A8 SS
I recently crossed 1500 mi in my SS.
![]() I had restrained myself from using the paddle shifts so far. Started using it last week.....and boy oh boy what a change!!! The exhaust sound changes completely! Its like having a whole new powertrain. Every time I let off the gas, the exhaust burbles....even in the 4th gear! And everytime I shift gears the exhaust crackles....these peculiar sounds where unheard using the automatic mode. I keep smiling like a kid while driving.... ![]() Loving every moment in this car...I hope it keeps surprising me forever! Put your windows down and enjoy that intoxicating LT1!

NPP exhaust sounds definitely have a "crackle and pop"
Can't wait to toss some headers in. Doesn't San Jose have good performance shops nearby?

Really? Why?
That's like not turning on your radio for 1500 miles....

I was worried that I may not be able to keep in under 4K....so let the automatic take care of that...

Funny, I made just the opposite decision for break-in - once the engine is up to temp, I use the manual mode paddles a lot, so that I can control and vary the RPM.

You can also use the shifter, when it's in drive push to the left, then you can push up or down. Makes it easier to shift when turning

I've never learned to drive a manual. I have a automatic coming and would really appreciate someone to explain in layman's terms how to use the paddles. Thanks in advance!

Move the shifter to the left while in Drive. If you have HUD, it will show the gear as M1 or M2 etc. Even the DIC will show the same. Now you are in the manual mode of automatic transmission ![]() Use the right shift paddle to shift up and the left to shift down. Remember the car will hold the gear if you don't shift up, so be careful when near the redline.....however it will automatically shift down for you once you slow down. For example if you come to a complete stop in 3rd, it will shift down to 1st automatically. Thats all there is.......enjoy the freedom and the new sound!!!

Yeah, those exhaust snap crackle and pops are more prevalent with a manual transmission as you decelerate with it in gear, you are doing the same thing by holding the car in gear with the paddles on the auto. The cradles and pops are actually a part of the tuning. There is tuning parameter called DFCO, deceleration fuel cut off that leans out the air fuel mixture and causes the cool popping sounds. It also helps improve gas mileage slightly. |

Thanks you all. So how about this if you can turn your auto into manual why do anyone get the manual. Is it limited when you use the paddles as oppose to a regular manual trans

i too have been driving the paddle shifters, barely any mileages on it (262) but love the crackles and pop sound. I tend to use the knob more than the paddles. Its a learning curve for me, everyone has to start somehow
