It looks like corvette stingray sales are sliding since there peak when the new stingray was introduced but notice the huge increase in sales when the new model came out. They sold like double the amount of C7s vs. C6s. You would expect with all the great press and awards that the Camaro would see a bigger spike in sales for the new model.

This is the exact car I drove. It has 100 miles on the odometer
I agree with you. By the time you add taxes and fees that car is $48k. I paid 38500 for my loaded 2013 2SS 1LE. IMO, Once you get up into that 40-50k range you start to leave your typical Camaro behind and you hit a different demographic. Unfortunately, I think that demographic is buying Lexus, BMW and Mercedes.

I feel the same way. Mustangs in my area are a dime a dozen. Camaros are pretty scarce. Whenever we go anywhere as a family they start a slug-bug thing blurting out "Camaro!" whenever anyone sees a 5th gen, and that's few and far between.

This is big right here. GM's ATP is $2,000 more than Fords.

Anyone who says they bought the camaro because it is more "rare," is a huge idiot. Sorry.

I thought Ford was also a few thousand over industry average which was 33,500.. Something along those lines.

They did this with the new impala. I'm glad they did. Helps resale, along with not seeing every other car being one.

I'll add to that: It's not just that the starting price of the Camaro is much higher, it's also about how much room for negotiation Ford and GM left to play with.
A new Mustang GT Premium base price is already $3-5,000 cheaper. On top of that the spread between MSRP and Invoice is ~$3,000 . Which allow you to buy it for $6-7,000 below MSRP - AKA Mid 30's for Mustang GT Premium with performance PKG.
The Camaro 2SS has a spread of ~$1,300 between MSRP and invoice with almost no incentives. You are lucky to buy one $3,000-3,500 below MSRP.

Bottom line - The Camaro might be a better car, however a Mustang GT Premium will cost you $5,000 less. That's a lot of money...

After trading a somewhat loaded 2014 Mustang for a practically base 2016 Camaro, I think a lot of the price difference is in the "options" on the Mustang, that are "standard" on the Camaro. I had $6,000 in options on my Mustang. Yet I feel like all I gave up was my heated leather seats, heated side view mirrors, and automatic. In the process I gained the backup camera, the push button start (which I am warming up to, it is really nice to be able to row my windows down before I get into the car), and an electronics package that meets and exceeds the electronics package I didn't spring for in my Mustang. I think to get a Mustang comparably equipped to a camaro you are going to spend quite a bit over base price on options.

The article I read said that Ford was right at 33,500. But I could have read it wrong.

Simple math tells us that
GM's $35,400 - $2000 = Ford's $33,400
GM's $35,400-$4200 = Industry average $31,200.
Which in turn means
Ford's $33,400 - $31,200 = Ford being $2200 over industry average.

That wasn't so difficult.

I don't know about that. I looked online at a similar equipped Mustang as the Camaro I test drove and the Mustang had a sticker of $39,000 with $2000 knocked off bringing the Mustang down to $37000. That's $7000 less than I can get the Camaro for before any negotiations. That's a huge difference. Too bad this current generation Mustang is hideous, IMO.

It's not the math that's the problem, it's the numbers that are shown. I read that the industry average is 33,xxx..
