You will have to pass a safety check and wear a helmet, but most regions have loaner helmets for you. (has to be a Snell 2010 or newer helmet) There are a handful of cars that are either not allowed in competition, mostly for tip over reasons. (Non Abarth Fiat 500 and Non ST Ford Focus are barred from competition in certain classes for instance) Most regions have online signups for their events, so while some will allow you to just show up and sign up on site it's best to do it ahead of time to make sure you get a spot. Or if you like you can go as a spectator and just watch and maybe take a ride with a few people. I bet if you asked around in the Texas regional forum here there will be one or two people that would be happy to point you in the right direction for events in that area. You gota do it though, you will love it!

When I got my 2011 I sold my 2007 Monte Carlo SS it is a FWD (LS4) as well (Blown to 500FWHP, Stage 2Trans, and LS7 intake and internals) but I was afraid of the transition FWD - RWD. I can only say this, BEST DECISION I EVER MADE! You won't even look back, More fun, Easier to maneuver and the best part is the car will tell you where she is going before you push in the wrong direction (The Monte had a lot of torque steer...). I'm sure you will do just fine.

Just take it slow for a while then you will notice that you don't even think about it any more.
Ha! This made me chuckle. Your description of "a lot of torque steer" has to be the understatement of the century or something.
