Second set of wheels/tires?

Who's considering running 2 sets of wheels and tires on the 1LE? Doesn't matter if its winter tires for daily drivers or a more aggressive set for track only use.

I have been thinking about both options. My car will be a daily driver and here in Greenville, SC. We do get below freezing several times and typically have 1 or 2 bouts of snow a year, rarely totaling more than 6" for the year. Being that I will likely need to drive a few times in below freezing temps I would...

1.) Pick up some stock SS wheels and placing some all seasons on them.
2.) Pick up a replica set of 1LE wheels by MRR and fit them with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, and just tough out the winters with the Goodyears
3.) Just live with the stock Goodyears, then swap to Michelin Pilot Super Sports, and tolerate the lack of performance in cold weather temps.

Opinions?

I will be. My 'race' tires will probably be 19s, smaller, lighter, and many more wide 19" options for good rubber than 20" right now.

Summers shouldn't be used in below freezing temps, either PSS or goodyears.

Mounting all seasons just for the freezing/snow days will prob be your best bet.

I know they shouldn't but I'm more concerned about distinguishing which tires will fail at temps below freezing. If you notice Michelin PSS has a warning that says

Quote:
"like all summer tires they are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice."
Compared to the Michelin Sport Cup's

Quote:
"like all Streetable Track & Competition tires, Pilot Sport Cup+ / N-Spec radials are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. It's also essential these tires be stored indoors at temperatures maintained above 32 degrees F"
That leads me to believe that even pilot super sports are capable of being used in below freezing temps without completely trashing the tire. However its definitely NOT RECOMMENDED!

So my concern is will I ruin the tire or just suffer the severe lack of performance? I only work 3 miles from my home so if its below freezing and dry can't I just gently drive it to work without trashing the PSS?

Living in Nashville we do get snow and ice. not often but we have had both over the past several years. In October I will get a set of all weather tires and choose a set of wheels that I would prefer on the car during the good weather. Hope to purchase as a set of wheels and tires. I'll then put the summers on the new wheels and the all weathers on my current black wheels. Then I should be good for a short winter and a great summer

The best option. Road salt eats sheet metal, and everything else.

That might make sense in your climate, but not mine.

No need to purchase, insure, and maintain an entire car just in case we get a dusting of snow 1-2 times a year.

I plan on getting some stock SS wheels with all seasons for the rare 1 day every 1-2weeks that I will drive the car in the winter. Im in Maryland so I do have to deal with the snow. If they salt the roads at all it wont be moving for at least a week or two no matter what tires I have on it.

But buying a second set of wheels does? A decent second set of wheels/tires will cost about the same.

Basic insurance on a car like that would be about $40 a month, and you weren't just talking about snow, you mentioned cold temps. So the car could be used whenever it was below 50, which would be a good amount no?

Temps below freezing are my concern. If it's above that I want to drive the car. Even a $2,000 shitbox with $40 a month liability only insurance will cost approximately $4500 over 5 years. Highly unlikely that a "shit box" won't need some type of repairs over 5 years. People on this forum are selling brand new SS wheels and tires for less than $1000.

I'm just interested in finding out if I need to have a dedicated winter wheel set or if I can find summer performance tires that will survive temps below freezing.
