Al O: If your car breaks on track, GM will fix it
Cool info from Al O. about the SS. The only slightly frightening part is if they consider a CAI enough to deny a warranty claim on a track day.

I wonder if they'll cover it with the GM Performance CAI as long as the dealership installs and documents it. Cat back exhaust shouldn't affect the warranty, so there may still be a few parts for guys who are concerned about the warranty.

It is real. They've been backing performance cars in non-competitive track use for some time now. The car has to be completely stock with extremely few exceptions, I'm sure. I highly doubt that you could run slicks if that's what that article is suggesting. Drag radials, maybe. R comp tires and track brake pads wouldn't be a problem I don't think. Just get all the guidelines from your dealership before making any changes.

Hmm, So with 500 miles on my stock SS I should not feel guilty about hitting the drag strip?
But really GM will not honor the warranty if you have a CAI? What if its the Cold Air Inductions CAI GM is selling? Was Al having a glass of wine when he said all that? I think as Al mentioned the tune is the deal breaker. Yet so far the new Camaro seems very robust. Time will tell.

This is where the Magnusen/Moss act comes into play. If you have a CAI and a re-map, and your rear diff blows out, GM can't arbitrarily void your warranty. They have to show your aftermarket parts were the direct cause of the failure.

This is completely accurate. On top of that, say they didn't warranty this kind of thing and you did break something at the track. How on earth are they going to know that you did it at the track if you don't tell them? It's not like the computer can say, I was at the track when I broke. It will only show what the car was doing when it broke, not where it was at.

I was t thinking of that, but you could easily say that you were there as a spectator, not racing, and that it broke on the way home. I would think that it's their responsibility to prove that it was done while racing at the track which should be hard to prove. Unless they pull entry admissions from the track.

This isn't directed at anyone in particular, it's just in reference to relying on the MM Act to help.
I respect and appreciate the intention of the Magnusen-Moss Act, but not being honest with your dealer when you bring your car in under suspicious circumstances is a huge mess. You may win in the end, but they can make it very difficult for you. I say, if you want your warranty to be safe, you really just need to play by the rules and be honest with your dealer. Tell them you modified the car, tell them it broke at the track. GM has already given owners a great deal by warrantying track breakage. Take it to the track and enjoy it in stock form, or modified within the guidelines, and have the warranty intact. It's hard to prove that the rear diff would or wouldn't have broken when you add more power to the engine. The MM Act is better for protecting people against outlandish denials, like,"you lowered the car, so the engine blew up." Anything in the power train that fails after the power train has been modified is going to be an uphill battle. Last edited by Nataphen; 04-02-2016 at 05:07 PM. |
