Lets talk radar detectors!!!
I just got pulled over, cop was hidden very well.....
Got me thinking, I will need one of these. While I don't speed to dangerous speeds, doing 50 in a 40 is a common habit sometimes (what I just got pulled for). What does everyone recommend ? I know that the cars having sensors on them, and cops using new lasers matters, so just wondering what I should look for. I don't want something that will tell me there is a cop AS I'm getting dinged. Something that can tell me there is a gun within a certain distance, regardless of the gun shooting at me or not. Anything out there? Thanks |

I hear Valentine 1, but that's all I have heard my entire life. Opening up for discussions on what else is out there.

I've always ran the Passport 8500x50 with pretty good luck. There is a newer model out, but this is what I use. It's obviously the best coolaid out there.
http://www.amazon.com/Escort-Passpor...s=passport+x70 Edit: Here's the newest model. The 9500ix, Looking at the reviews it looks like I need to upgrade. They are overwhelmingly positive. http://www.amazon.com/Escort-Passpor...eywords=9500ix

I have an escort 360 and love it. Since I am still breaking in my car I am not really speeding just about 5 over and this thing spots cops from a long way away. It is great and I love it and recommend getting it with the blend mirror mount and mirror tap for hard wiring it in.

I have an Escort 360 I just bought a week ago, but I'm returning it tomorrow and going to get the Escort Max 2. From what I can tell they are the exact same thing except the 360 has directional arrows. To me those arrows aren't worth the $150 premium.

I have a Valentine 1 and love it. The arrows work really well. I did get pulled over once and the dector didn't go off so it's not perfect.

Tad more expensive, but not familiar with these at all For me, it's residential speeding that will get me. I don't speed in neighborhoods per say, but the back roads and side roads to get to my community I do. I don't believe in doing 120 on a highway. We can do 80 in Florida and usually get away with it in most cases. |

I have Escort red line and from very far away smells them, my only issue now that also detects the proximity sensor technology from some cars, so I have to reduce the sensitivity of my radar. Escorts & Valentines are top radars. I'm not convinced yet of the gps learning feature in some new radars, is better to have strong sensitivity with some good proximity car sensors filtering device for reducing false alarms.
From what I have read there is no radar detector that would save you. from a laser. Laser always would pick you faster, only a radar jammer could help, but you need to check if its legal in your state, and I believe they are very expensive devises. Trooper's planes also measure your speed, and also the old rule of measuring time traveled from one spot to the others is used some times before pointing a fast radar trigger. Always drive safe and don't endanger others and your self, and be prepared to pay the price of stupidity.

I have an Escort Max2 and an Escort max 360. both have paid for themselves many times over.
I do like the arrows on the 360. My max2 is used in my old '59 Apache pickup as my speedometer (for now) Follow everyone's advice on here, it's good stuff also, remember that these things detect radar guns. If you are the only one on the road, and his radar isn't on until he targets you (or the instant on feature, preset at a desired speed)....he will get you. These are mainly designed to pick up the radar when it's targeting someone else keep that in mind, and it will be worth the investment |

Always been happy with Valentines. The new ones with the Junk detector is very good at filtering out The false alarms from Blindspot and distance sensors used in many of the new cars. My 11 year old Valentine would not work in the Camaro due to the side monitors triggering it like crazy. The new design is perfect.

Last detector I had was a V1. Loved the arrows. But I think other detectors have caught up or even surpassed the V1 at this point. One thing I will say about detectors is that if you only go 10 over or less, IMO it's best to not even run one. My V1 has been in my "leftover electronics" drawer in my office for 10 years. Been going without a detector for that long. Been pulled over twice, once for 75 in a 60 (was passing a truck) and once for 74 in a 60 (was actually doing 62... cop either lying or shot someone else). Got a warning both times. I can pretty much guarantee if I had a detector (visible), I would have gotten a ticket. I generally go 4 or 5 over. I see no need to do 10 or 15 over as it doesn't help much on short trips and going slower actually gives me more time to drive my car.
On longer trips, I'll push it a bit since when driving a couple hours, the time can add up. But I still think in general, you're better off without one if you're not a compulsive speeder.Just my .02. Mike |
