Paint Issues
Hey guys,
I have been in and around this board for about 3 months, but did not order my '16 until Jan 21. Anyways, my production date was 2/15/16 and I took delivery on 2/27/16. I immediately did a full inspection and did not notice any paint issues, except for two. That flaw was that the roof ditch indentations looked to not have much base coat, resulting in what looked like a brown speckled line all the way from the windshield to the rear window on both sides. The other was that my bumper has a very fine scratch by the passenger front sidemarker and fender. Me and the saleswoman looked over the roof and came to the conclusion that if it was a one-off defect, it would not be so uniform from side to side. We also thought about comparing it to another on the lot, but there were not any there. Anyways, I took delivery with her promising that all flaws will be fixed this week. Today I stopped by two large Chevy dealers and came to a very interesting finding. After looking at about 8 black Camaros 16 Camaros (V6 and V8), ALL of them had the same thing in the roof ditch indentation where the base was insufficient, but to varying degrees. The MBM all looked like they were a tad worse than the regular GBA Black ones, but not by much. I think the flake in the MBM contributes to that difference for the most part. I did see one black model that did not have much of it, but in exchange it had very noticeable paint runs in those area. I then looked at 2 BVM (Blue Velvet) colored Camaros, which also had thin base in those area, but it was less noticeable than the GBA color. It had more of a dark gray/blue look, not the brownish look that the black ones have. I also viewed the yellow, bright red, silver, and white Camaros. Most of those were too hard to see if that paint issue was present or not due to reflection of the sun on such a bright day. So on my way out of the office, I stopped at a reputable body shop I always go to and inquired about the above issue. After he wiped it and observed it, he agreed that it is missing sufficient base coverage. He then said that it was probably done on purpose to avoid paint running or overbuild because that area is very subject to that since it is so thing and the paint is base+pearl+clear would be a pretty thick coat. This is inline with what I concluded before. He also said that he doubts it is an issue with just the dark colors, and more than likely affects all of them with varying degrees of obviousness. I then showed him the trunk area, where the underside of the cover, and truck ditches/latches were also lightly missing some base. He said that he sees that a lot more, but that it is not "satisfactory" for GM to be pushing out these issues. He then told me that my car, or any other SS with thinner base in the truck jambs, latches, and roof line, will not have any future issues as clear coat covered all of these paints flaws. He then viewed the rest of the car and agreed that everything else was fine with the paint. So, with all the above said, I am having a dilemma. I can either take it in and complain enough to make the dealer repaint the roof and bill GM, or leave it how it is. I think there will be convincing that needs to be done since most other black models have the same issue. I think most Camaro buyers are not noticing it because they are not really watching out for it like me (due to the issues member Netslave posted about), or because they that part of the roof is tucked behind the side of the vehicle and can't be noticed unless one is standing above it. Then there is the thing where it does not show much on colored cars, even though it is more than likely there on them. What do you guys think?
