I'm a detailer for a living, you will need a polisher for one. Most likely you will not get it by hand, only with really light surface scratches.

A lot of elite leveled detailers use product from a company called shine supply.
Their compounds:
Flat top- heavy cut
Classic cut- medium cut
Classic polish
Slick back- and ultra fine polish

As far as polishers go porter cables are not very strong but are cheap. I would look in to a torq 10fx or torq 22d. The torq 22d would probably be your best all around choice because it cut really really well and works great like a rules big foot, both have 21mm throws but the torq has a smaller price tag and feels less like plastic

PADS
Meguiars microfiber cutting pads are awesome for heavy cutting
Orange pad for the next cut
Then white pad
Then black pad for polish to give it the factory gloss

Don't concentrate just on the scratch, make sure you slowly do an area going left to right up and down until the cutting compound looks like it is nearly gone.

If the scratch is still there and you have never wet sanded before just spray the scratch with water and the sand paper and use 2000 grit so you can start lightly maybe do 10 circular motions and then clean the area and do the cut and polish again.

If the scratch is still there after either process it will at least be very hard to see especially from the distance most people will look at your car from. Wrote this a general post for advice, I understand people may not want to spend the money, pm me if anyone has questions or needs help
