Selling a used car tips? (Making room for a Camaro!!)

Hey all,

First off, thanks to the extremely low-pressure sales environment created by Becky and the high praise from everyone here, I ordered a 2SS from Becky that has been built! Still waiting on when it gets to her and then gets sent to me but that means...

I have to sell my car. It's a 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T, with about 64k miles. I've never sold a car private party before, so I wanted to see if you all had any advice. Here's what I've done so far:
- Got the 60k service done
- Ordered the title from DMV (how did that get misplaced?? Damn)
- Had the interior detailed and the exterior clay barred and waxed
- Paid up the registration

I plan on:
- Taking a bunch of pics
- Putting up an ad on Craigslist

Any advice? I read that I might want to take the car to a mechanic so they can inspect it as if I was buying it, so I know in advance if there are any issues. I'm also wondering if I should take pics and proactively disclose any problems (one scuff on the bumper, key scratch on the trunk lid) in the ad, or just wait until people come see it in person.

Any help is appreciated!! Can't wait for the Camaro...

Put the price at more than what you really want for it, for "haggle" room.

Having sold several cars on Autotrader and Craigslist, I always let the potential buyer do an inspection if they wanted it. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. As Enzia35 recommended, I always list the car at least 500 more than I would really take and let them talk me down so they feel like they're getting a good deal. Be honest about the condition of the car but don't like you need to detail every little scratch or dent unless they are major. Just take some overalls of the car and let them find the little stuff in person. But you should disclose any accidents or if the car has a salvage title up front. Other than that, its just a matter of deciding which website(s) you want to use to list the car. Craigslist usually attracts a lot of scammer or brokers, which is annoying so I will bite the bullet and use Autotrader. Sounds like you're on the right track though.

With my new SS on the way, I will also be selling my car in the next month to make room. Good luck with your sale!

I have appraised thousands of cars as a dealer in my career and something that always amazed me is how many people bring me a car that is DIRTY...I don't mean just filthy on the exterior, but more importantly, the interior. If you have ratty flootrmats , dump them and replace them with some clean cheap mats from an auto parts styore. Clean glass, clean leather - it does not have to be detailed but I've seen popcorn, trash and other things that just make the car look old.

the other thing when selling privately is the funds transaction. Specify cashiers check or wire transfer...and until it clears, no car.

I generally sell my cars on enthusiast forums and have had very good luck doing that...Questionable if that car has any enthusiast following at all, but if there is a forum, put the ad up there.
Otherwise, Autotrader and Craigslist if you want to stick it in there with the Mass of similar vehicles being advertised. Just be aware of Craigslist...While it may be good to secure a local buyer, the Scammers work that site pretty hard. Just be careful.
