I'm coming from a V6 challenger with supercharger and lots of mods, engine, exhaust, rear, suspension, rims tires et all, neat car. Mine was the lightest Challenger made at 3720 lbs. I've driven many Challengers upto but not including the Hellcat.
I test drove a V6 16 Camaro and I new this would be the car for me. I like the lightness, size etc. I figure I wait for the I4 since I like being the underdog and don't "drag race". I like handling and do lots of autoX with some serious cars: Type R, Civic SI, setup specifically for autoX. Anyway the Oldlady, got tired of me always tooling around in the garage and a white 2016 SS just showed up. I'm very happy with the balance of the car, there is no Challenger that can match the SS in street manners, no matter the suspension of tires mod vs stock SS. The SS is so much more tossable, so much more controlled, I felt confident in the chassis for the first second I stepped into the car. I find driving in track mode but with traction control ON!!! Gives me the best performance and street handling but keeps the shiny side up so to speak. I've driven and owned many performance / handling cars starting with a 69 z/28 Camaros. I'll add one more note, the chassis is so well behaved with traction control on, I think my teenage kids can drive it no problem. The daughter drivers a little fast but she is not a drag racer by any means, the son is an autoXer and not really big on straight line acceleration. He wants to keep the built Type R, it has a new 2.1 liter all bore sleeved engine at 270 HP @ 9200 rpm and weighs in at 2300 lbs. I think the Camaro will be more fun but I'm kind of worried about the SS going through MORE than a set of autoX tires in a season!!!! |

I've driven a 2SS with Magnetic Suspension twice and pushed it hard and it's a fantastic setup.
The only thing that lets the new Camaro down is the technology package. Uconnect in the Challenger is miles ahead of the MyLink in the Camaro. I went Saturday and drove one again and hooked up my bluetooth OBDII scanner using Torque on my phone. The Camaro doesn't even give you Air Fuel Ratio readout through OBDII!!!! That's a huge let down for someone like me that is performance oriented. My 2002 4Runner and 2009 370Z BOTH provide this data, and the new Challenger displays it on the dash! |

As for the OBDII connector, if you have the right tool you can get EVERY parameter from it on the LT1's, seen it with my own eyes on my buddies SS. For the most part an OBDII connector is an OBDII connector. Probably a software issue with Torque, which isn't exactly a quality tool when it comes to reading parameters... |

When I was a younger man the guy down the street got his son a 396 Camaro, a few weeks later he plowed into my buds and killed 3 out of 4 of them outright. The car is too much for me and I've been driving performance cars for more than 40 years. This kind of reminds me of the aflurenza kid. You will never appreciate and respect something that you did not put many hours working for, building and driving.

I was shopping for a new car and thinking of getting a new Challenger or Charger. It actually took a family member mentioning the Camaro to me for me to think "Oh yeah, what about a camaro?" as I had dismissed it in the past.
In my opinion the Camaro feels like a much newer car (And I guess it is). The interior feels a lot more modern to me, and having the support for Carplay (and later, Android Auto) was pretty big for me. After test driving both the Camaro and a Challenger, this was the obvious pick based on what I was looking for. I don't think that has anything to do with age, you can take care and thought when doing something at just about any age. On the other hand, none of us can say we we won't ever make a (possibly life threatening) mistake or get into an accident, there is always the chance of human error. |
