Who's actually "Breaking it in"?

With cars these days, and their technology and advances, I don't see there being an ACTUAL advantage or NEED to "Break in" the car.

A lot of friends who broke in their cars and went soft on the engine didn't produce as much torque/HP as my friends who drove it like crazy.

I know for me, I've been pretty heavy on the pedal! What about you guys?

So you don't believe the engineers and the owners manual?

fixed that for you

I intend on breaking it in pretty close to the manual's specifications for the sake of breaking in the whole car. engine break in on the crate engine's manual is less "soft", so I'm sure you will be fine if you choose to have some fun now and then when breaking in.

If you do a search on this subject, you will find many threads about it with varying answers and quite heated debates.

No not for me… lawyers may make other parts of the book, But I really think there's something to break in ....there's a few different ways people think about it ....but to take the car and just run it without any plan it all makes no sense to me.

I'll be following the break in procedure.

One thing I find interesting.. there have been multiple comments about how a hard break in resulted in "more torque/HP" than someone who supposedly followed the recommended break in procedure.

Speaking only for myself, I'm much more interested in the long term reliability and maintenance history of recommended break in vs. other. I never hear about that... only "drove it hard, produced more power". I've not seen definite numbers either way. And following the break in procedure is easy, so I'll be doing it. After that, if it makes advertised numbers, I'm happy.

He's saying that the original motor was such a tweaked out, oil smoking, chitty-chitty bang-bang running engine, that indeed the car produced more HP / Torque when a replacement engine was used using the proper break in method.

See how simple?

The only way you can follow the owners manual break-in, is if you get the car with 0 miles on it. These dealers love to play with them. You know they aren't concerned about any break-in. Personally I drove aggressive occasionally. But tried to keep it by the book.

I'm a huge fan of running the engine at various rpms at or below the break-in limited rpm with an OCASSIONAL (like 3 times a week) wot run in second or third gear to 1 or 2k above break-in limit or 1k below redline. I constantly vary the RPM (1 minute at 3k, the next at 2k, the next at 4k, etc.)

I think someone else mentioned something like this in the other break-in thread.

I've been driving my car harder than the owners manual recommends, but not WOT or using cruise control on the freeway. I've always found this an interesting topic because almost every test drive I've been on the salesman has encouraged getting hard on the throttle to "check out the power". I would imagine that anything purchased off the lot has already been driven much harder than the owners manual recommends. I also purchase about 10 vehicles a year for my construction company, not one comment in 10 years regarding proper break-in. I'm not saying its not important, but apparently not important enough for the dealership to bring it up. Furthermore, our fleet of 1/2ton Chevy trucks are driven hard from day 1, and we regularly get over 200k miles without any major issues. Just my 2 cents.
