I'm very impressed that the 6th Gen SS seems to be starting at the level of the 1LE. I can only imagine how good the higher performance models will be.

But GM won't advertise the 1LE any more than the advertise the Z51 on the Corvette. And I thought they did advertise the 1LE on the Gen5 a bit, but that may just be my bad memory. Those that want it will know about it and get it. As pointed out, for the most part, everything that makes the 1LE package makes the car just a bit less friendly as a DD and does nothing for your driving on public roads....or should do nothing for you driving on public roads. Don't misunderstand, there are people that will want a 1LE and will NEVER take it to the track and never see anywhere near 9/10ths of the cars capability. They will want the "best" they can get so they can say they have the best Camaro or a better Camaro than base. If there is a 1LE, and I believe there will be, it will be tougher to have it significantly outperform the base SS. You can already get better brakes on the base car. You may get a different rear axle ratio, you may get a square tire set up and some great tweaking and tuning (keep in mind, GM has always had better chassis engineers than Ford) to the suspension for a better balance for track use. But if GM does what I think they'll do, there will be a 1LE to beat the crap out of the GT350 (which the SS does not do........no matter how much you guys want it to) and a Z/28 to whip the GT350R. The only question is.....................................what engine goes in the Z/28. And without a new engine, it looks like to me like the Z/28 is a light weighted ZR1 with CC brakes. Ain't this fun?

False.
GM has said that the current SS is a better handling car. Not based on a few laps. I will take GMs statement as True. They design and built it to excčed the previous 1LE.

The 1LE was a "skunk works" project that was never officially planned. Everything on it, was carefully put together by an enthusiastic team during ZL1 development. After it was completed, and impressive...the idea was pitched to the decision-makers, and it was a hard argument to ignore. It took off like wildfire in sales, and the magazines raved about it. So naturally...I would assume the team is planning another one for this generation. Considering how good the standard SS is...I can't wait to see what they have planned for the 1LE! This will likely be the car I buy to replace my 14 1LE. |

I would offer this in regards to tracking, track-times, head-to-head comparisons, etc.
Many "don't care" about the track, or track times for these factory cars but IMO it is very significant. Track performance is the true test of quality in engineering, reliability, over-all longevity and a commitment to excellence that cannot be achieved without tracking, pushing to the limits, etc. That Chevy and GM are pursuing these results with the Camaro should reassure buyers that they are buying a quality product. Even though you may never personally track or race your stock car, it absolutely "matters" that the Camaro out performs or "beats" the competition. For many, it is the deciding factor in which brand to purchase. Track options like what would be offered in a 1LE are absolutely spectacular as well as being a bargain convenience for those who like to go to the track with their cars. Ask anyone who has sunk money into their stock SS, and they will tell you the 1LE is the bargain of the century. No muss, no fuss, no guesswork on how or what to mod...no real need to mod anything....Drive it to the track and have the time of your life. I feel sad for those who think track engineering and options for these cars are unnecessary, or a waste...It's the greatest thing going, and re-assurance that the manufacturer wants to "win". We all benefit from the engineering that results from tracking. Take your Camaro, no matter what model to a weekend track event, or auto-cross, or whatever. You will get a much greater appreciation for what you bought and drive. Good luck.... |

GM wont advertise, and I think that's a good idea. You need to know what a 1LE will do to your handling... for a regular driver, the SS is a SAFER car to drive. They dont want people ignorant of the nature of the 1LE to hear about it second hand and buy it thinking itsa pretty camaro, and then have a rash of drivers who don't have track/ dynamic driving experience to spin their cars out while hurting themselves and others.... Look no further than Audi's 1st Gen TT debacle, before they added more aero to the back and reduces its tail happy issues... The very nature of the 1LE is to make a Camaro handling dynamics go from safe understeer in almost all conditions to a car that handles much cloer to neutral, which is very rewarding, BUT requires more driver skill and vigilence.
