Keep in mind there is not a lot of profit in a new vehicle. Especially a passenger car. So unless you have a voucher or some other incentive there are not going to be large discounts till end of the model year.

I had a dealer have a 1ss for over a month and when I was inquiring..the price was ridiculous to lease so i asked this very question . Exact answer from the salesperson is that not many people are used to walking into a dealership and paying this much for a camaro.
I just think price is to high right now. |

Good point. Everyone wants a better Camaro than the next but at what price point. How far upmarket do they plan to take the Camaro SS? I was in a dealership by me and even the sales reps felt like the price was too high. They felt defeated trying to justify a $41k V6 Camaro. I think I am a buyer for a 1SS with MN6, NPP and maybe MRC, which puts it just under $40k MSRP. By the way, I paid $38,500 for a 2SS 1LE, NPP, NAV, Sunroof. So, as you can see I would have to step down from a loaded 2SS 1LE to 1SS to keep the price point similar just 2.5 years later. Another viewpoint on how the price went up.

....and i thought i would get flamed for saying Chevy priced this car too high.........!!!!
I will now predict that the Camaro will not outsell the Mustang in 2016...in any month!!!!......unless Chevy puts serious incentives on the car. This is a Great car that outperforms its competitors. However, if anyone thinks Chevy is going to steal significant sales from BMW, Mercedes, Infiniti or Lexus coupes they are sadly mistaken. I think with a few exceptions, those makes bring in a different class of buyer who will not give the Camaro a second look. Plus a local dealer in the Tampa area is advertising 2016 Mustang GT with the Performance Pack for around 33K. 1/2 second slower, but who really cares. $7-$8 grand less is a lot of coin to most of us. As I type this, Fox News just reported the average price of a new car is $34K.....Maybe it is just the time we live in and these prices are the new "normal".

Price is on the high side for me too. And another problem I see is the Camaro market is flooded with gen5 models and most of those owners would love to move up but how many can afford to do so and what are the old camaros going to be worth if the market is flooded with those for sale. The only reason I haven't bought a camaro before now is there are just too many of them out there and I like to drive something more unique. Three of them parked in the Walmart parking lot alone every day owned by walmart employees and driving to walmart from my house, a 2 mile drive, I always see a camaro or two. But with the Cadillac suspension and Corvette engine and Corvette electronics on the new generation I am going to order one come April. A 1SS mostly because there is really nothing other than leather seats on 2SS that I want and also to keep the price down to 37,000 or so. Heated seats, heated mirror, HUD, and other fluff I don't need on my muscle car so 2SS not for me. Will have dealer install leather seat upholstery.

Hey guys,
Been reading this thread with a great amount of interest. I'm becoming concerned that even though my price is good (500 below invoice), that in 1 year I will already be upside down (not putting a ton of cash down). A while back I was looking into 2013+ Boxster S' and now I'm thinking about it again just because I don't want to take a beating on resale value in case I decide to get something else a few years down the line. The 2SS is a great car, but I'm starting to wonder if I need to wait (which would suck because I need a second vehicle), or just go a different direction (wife doesn't like Vettes). Any thoughts? Selling well or not?
My 3 local dealers all have multiple ones on the lot for over a month and not sold yet, they better release some incentives

In Dec 2014 GM sold 6628 of the stale 2014/2015 models. This Dec GM only sold 5366 Camaro's while featuring a mix of highly discounted 2015's and reasonable inventory of brand new but more expensive 2016's(with zero incentives) in a record Dec vehicle sales market. Meanwhile the new Mustang continues to outsell Camaro by a wide margin, unlike the Gen5 model run.
GM would have been MUCH better served replicating its C7 Corvette launch. Base 2014 Vette's were barely $1000 more than the far inferior outgoing 2013 model. Demand was so strong it was a home run success while supply could not keep up with sales affording GM the opportunity to raise the base MSRP $2000 in short order. Hardly anyone blinked an eye while demand remained exceptionally strong. This style roll out would have truly helped price perception of the new Camaro as its core fan is much more price conscious.

I'm concerned as well, but come on folks...this needs more time (at least another 2 - 4 months more time) before we can really draw any fairly accurate conclusions here.
I like what trippowergto above said about launching the Corvette just very slightly above the previous gen's price, therefor creating high demand for a vastly superior car, and then raising the MSRP a bit later on. Too bad GM didn't try that. About 40K plus V6s. Come on folks...that is not the norm. Yeah...I have seen one, and frankily I think its just a bad decision to put a V6 car like that on the lot. I loaded up a 2LT V6 with automatic, RS, safety package, lighting package (big cost on this package), NPP....can't remember what else. It was LOADED...and still came out just under 40K. So these over 40K V6 cars must have all of this, plus other accessories added to reach that price. A nice 1LT V6 with some options (say...auto/RS/NPP)is actually a very good buy in my opinion, as its only a few thousand more than my 2010 1LT was, with more options and a vastly better car. This is what the average buyers need to see...but sadly all the will see are the expensive trims for a while.

I think one of the big issues is that for the average car buyer...not an enthusiast..not a performance junky..just someone who wants a good looking coupe with a V6..there is a bit of sticker shock. Let's say you're okay with a low mile used car...like this one
http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/de...5585/overview/ 2015 1LT auto. 18,114 miles and $23,988. A similar 6th Gen, 1LT, V6, auto..is $29,685. Now assuming you just pay MSRP on both, that's still a $5,700 difference. The 2015 is still under warranty and on the street/daily driving..will perform almost exactly the same. In terms of just wanting a good looking car...what does the 6th gen have in a base 1LT form that the 5th Gen doesn't? And that's where there will be issues for some people I think.. |

I've been looking at midsize cars and I can get a 2014-2015 AWD Fusion in the low 20k range.. These cars were 32-39k new. What you're bringing up is the case for pretty much every car purchase.. Besides a Subaru, Honda, Toyota, and some niche cars. The way most of these cars depreciate, I'm not sure I will ever buy a new car again. Probably something 2-3 years old. |
