^^^^ 100% THIS ^^^^

I drove a new 2SS last week and had the same initial feeling as OP... then I hit it hard from a 20MPH roll. It's the smooth ride and (with the A8) smooth shifting that makes it seem slower but, yeah... it's a very fast car.

Even though the car comes with a 8spd auto now I think the 2.77 gears are a mistake. The auto is going to go to the highest gear as quickly as possible. If I had the 8 spd I'd do a gear change. Even if i had the 6 spd I do a gear change. It is the number 1 thing you can do to make a car more lively around town. Ford has always done this with the mustang. And they have always made 1st gear in their manuals lower to make up for a lack,of tq.

first gear is 4.56. It does not need lower gears rear gears. This feels a lot like the 700R4 did with a very low first gear.

As some have alluded to, the suspension on a car has a lot to do with the perception of motion. The newer technology is designed to keep the car from rolling or shifting its center of gravity. Older cars lift up on a hard launch and most pull one way or the other. All of this tells your body its really moving. Take for example movie theater seats that have motion control (e.g. D-box). They don't accelerate at all but can give the sensation of movement. What is that ride at Disney? something over California? It makes you feel like your flying over California....but you aren't. So suspension and handling can have a lot to do with how fast you feel you are going.

I own a GTR and it doesn't feel fast. It's because before you know it, you are taching 160mph and it's still pulling. Just creeps up on ya. Now, the ZL1. That was a tad different. That was kick you in your pants fast.

The "problem" with these new sports cars is that they are trying to act like a BMW, which means more cabin isolation and a smoother ride so it"s common that these cars feels slower.

Like others said, it's the refinement. I test drove a 2015 Mustang 5.0 when shopping to replace my 2005 Mustang GT. The '05 was 300 hp and 320 torque, the '15 was 430 hp 400 torque. And it didn't *seem* any faster than the '05 on the test drive.

I ended up buying a BMW M235i. Funny thing is, on paper that car has more power and faster acceleration than my '05 Mustang. But it doesn't seem like it. There was a lot more "drama" with the '05 Mustang. It reared up and snorted at WOT - and was more show than go.

Also funny is that my '03 MINI has a whopping 120 hp, and that car seems very quick. But it's relative. The car is so small and low to the ground that it always seems like it's going faster than it really is.

The newer cars insulate you from the outside world, and our brains are tricked. The only vehicle I have that is really fast, and feels really fast, is my Kawasaki liter bike. There's nothing insulating me from the outside world when I'm on that, other than the helmet, and it definitely feels like the 10 second machine that it is.

The quieter and more refined the better as far as I am concerned. It's gotta have a performance exhaust but I want the inside to be fairly quiet at 80 mph. The valvetrain noise in my LS2 GTO
drives me bat$@@@ crazy!
