Does the '16 officially antiquate the classic muscle car?

This new Camaro is such a large step forward in every respect of performance. It has reached a level now that even guys with enough skills to fabricate just about whatever modifications they want to a classic muscle car, that most still won't be able to match it without paying more than the '16 1SS sticker price.

So here is the question. Is a LS7 Chevelle, Hemi 'Cuda, or Mach 1 Mustang even cool anymore? Big, slow, and heavy, without any modern conveniences. Are they purely just for museum pieces now without legitimate street credibility?

I real car guy will always love and respect a big, loud, snarling, growling classic. Cars exceeded the performance and comfort of the classics a long time ago. Most family sedans are faster and handle better than most classic muscle cars in stock form. Even well built muscle car only runs 12 or 13 second quarters (excluding of course the drag setups. I'm talking average street car). So as man of us often say, its not about being the fastest. Modern cars will never be as cool as a big block Chevelle or a cherry Impala.

Classic cars are definitely still cool, and always will be. But I think trying to compare the two is just a lost cause. The only answer is to appreciate both for what they are.

I would call it the evolution of the muscle car. Even though it will run with the BMWs and Audis it has a NA V-8 and a growling exhaust.

In my mind, that's allows the Gen 6 to retain it's muscle car status and just not be another fast, great handling car.

Of course they are cool. They've been antiquated for a while now. If you think they aren't cool any more, try to buy one.

I'm waiting for all the baby boomers to die off so we can start buying all these cool 60's & 70's classic muscle cars again.

And I have watched new cars get completely overlooked when in the company of a nice classic. Regardless of interior amenities or speed.

Yeah, that will NEVER happen. The original muscle cars will ALWAYS be cool.

Absolutely the truth.

Bring a newer car to a car show and watch how many people DON'T look at it.

I sold my old school muscle car in 2009 and have no interest in owning another. The new cars do everything so much better. That said, they are still cool with a sound and smell that is unmatched

100% agree. I never took my '12 5.0 to any of the local meet ups, but old muscle and old exotics were always the big hits. Then came the newer stuff.

I'd imagine only the true hypercars (LaF, 918, Pagani, Veyrons, Koenigsegg etc) would hold any sort of match against old school stuff. As much as I love 911's, they are a dime a dozen at those events. An original '70 GSX however... #holdthephone!

I totally get the classic feel. Just riding in them is an experience that is hard to match. For me though if it's cool AND fast that is what separates a car from being neat to look at, and something worth owning. My favorite Chevy ever is a '59 sedan but I'll never own one b/c it rides like a wagon and my 4 cyl. Optima is more fun to drive. I don't need to have to fastest car in the club anymore but am not yet comfortable to being beaten by a WRX.

So what brought up this question is that we just had pretty much the last cruise of the year in our car club. I've been a muscle car fan for a long time now. It was the first event I can remember looking at truly gorgeous classics that guys have perfected over 20-30 of ownership and felt "Meh" about them. At the midnight flat spot or floor from a roll those cars may as well be a Stanley steamer.

Just curious as to what the gen6 buyer, the new generation of pony car owner, thinks about the state of the new in relation to the old which had been the standard for a long time.
