Customer orders: Chevy updates.

I'm going to throw this as an email to Chevy for customer improvement.

Why can't they (Chevrolet) do some type of email system to track ones order progress?

Sign up with your order number and receive email updates about the car status and progress. Could even add little bonuses like a security camera shot of the car and the stage it is at. Why not make the process transparent and encourage people to custom order their cars?

From what I have read the ordering process for a custom mini is quite involved and there are constant updates. Think you can even watch videos of your car being built.

No reason we shouldn't get service like this. Is it due to an antiquated ordering system?

How many of you would love to see a photo of your car prepped for transport and loaded up on a car hauler or rail car? Or, a simple 2mp pixilated shot of your car getting the engine stuffed into the engine compartment.

They do this with Corvettes, but they charge you like $2,000 for the service.

More hassle than its worth from the manufactures stand point. Majority of the cars are not customer order but dealer purchased. They would have to install cameras on the assembly line and build bays. Any and all employees would be required to wear professional uniforms at all times. All for something that typically takes a few weeks when not new production vehicle.

Though I would really enjoy watching the videos I would in turn be one of the nitpicking a holes that would be upset about the smallest detail.

I think that that would be pretty sweet, especially with it being a big deal for us car folk. I mean this is a car that I will keep for decades, so I wouldn't mind having some media of my car being made.

Beat me to it.

I love pics. I have a million of my nova build. lol But, I would rather them focus on building a good car than taking pics. Maybe if mini did that they would be better cars. Now mini is second only to fiat for problems.

That is a whole lot to ask a manufacturer to do. There are a ton of things to consider before doing this. Security, workflow interference, etc. I don't really see the camera/video thing happening.

As far as order updates, perhaps that's possible, but it also negates the role of your dealer and that relationship with you.

you guys are over thinking this.

Purely automated computer science stuff. You don't think there are camera's monitoring every inch of the assembly line?

Even if the camera idea can't be realized. Would it be so hard to add an email algorithm to email "your order has been accepted. Production date anticipated ******."

Next email: "your car has hit the assembly line!"

Next email: "your car is assembled and is awaiting final inspection."

Etc etc...

It's not like chevy's computer systems don't know the exact status of your order from square 1 to the end. Look at the allocation system. It's all highly organized snd coordinated.

They have a Chevrolet Customer Service order tracking thread, on the Corvette Forum: C7 General Discussion section.

This thread is monitored by Chevrolet Customer Care Team

Camaro6 has their version somewhere on this Forum.

A very high percentage of Corvettes are customer ordered and will be to the end of each generation's run. It is true many more Camaros are customer ordered when compared to the rest of the Chevrolet car lines but no where the percentage of Corvette.

Finally, Chevy could do an in house version of GMConnects but has chosen not to. It would not take a lot of money and the software is already developed. Maybe someday it will, but likely not on this decade.

The UAW does not allow video surveillance of employees on the shop floor.

This.

I worked in UAW plants.
UAW won't allow cameras anywhere where there are union employees.
