I think the big question is: What will this thing look like after it's been dropped a few times?

My 5th gen's switchblade FOB may be made out of cheap plastic, but I've been able to smooth out any scuff marks with fine grit sandpaper and it looks good as new. I'm worried about all the chrome on this one.

Do the same thing you do for you Gen 5 Fob. Sand it with fine grit sand paper but then buff it out with 0000 steel wool. That's how us guitar techs do refrets and levels on guitar necks. Works like a charm.

And then try not to drop your keys. Lol.

I always keep my fobs by themselves, no other keys attached to them and just keep them in my pocket all the time, especially with push button start and passive keyless access, no need to take out of my pocket. This was less chance of it being lost, dropped, etc.

I used to worry about my fobs getting scratched. Then I bought a replacement upgraded one for my car and got it for about 2/3 the price gently used. It had some marks, but I figured it was alright since it was going to be in my pocket with stuff anyways. Very liberating once I stopped caring.

Besides, will it ever be out of our pockets now? We get keyless entry and push button start, right?

Yes keyless entry and push button start is awesome. I love it on my Cruze.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 times in the last year alone, probably. Mainly from trying to unlock my apartment with groceries in my other hand. Too lazy to have separate key rings, and my apartment won't let me switch the turn key deadbolt for a smart lock.

Why? I don't get why this feature can't be added. Other cars have it. Keep the car in Manual, remote start the car. Get in. touch anything but the break and the car shuts off.

Think how a manual works. It does not have "Park" or the hydraulic torque converter like an automatic. When a manual is in gear it is directly, physically connected to the engine at the flywheel via the clutch. If the engine turns the wheels turn. While you can park it in neutral with the parking brake engaged and remote start would be ok, if you parked it in any gear when you hit the starter the car would move. That's why all manuals since probably the 60s have had a clutch pedal starter switch interrupt which will not let the car start under any circumstances if the clutch pedal isn't fully depressed to the floor.

Now, there are a couple aftermarket remote start companies that make a special remote start that ensures you leave the car in neutral when you park it by forcing you to do certain steps in a certain order, lastly opening the door and getting out, closing it, and locking the doors with the remote with the engine still running. Then the computer knows the car can't possibly be moving and shuts the engine down. The remote start will then only work if the door hasn't been opened, ensuring its still in neutral and the parking brake is still on.

The other way is to hot wire the clutch starter switch interrupt. That's fine if you remember to ALWAYS park in neutral.

No auto manufacturer will take the liability that comes with that, so they simply do not offer remote start with manual transmissions.

About 20 years ago I worked at Best Buy and a guy who I worked with had an '89 Taurus SHO with a 5 speed stick. He put a remote start in it and hot wired the starter switch. I remember he hit the remote start with it in gear, and the car started moving in the parking lot. Luckily it was after closing so there weren't many cars, and it didn't go fast because the load of being engaged kept the engine from turning over completely.
