I don't think an F1 driver considers them overrated or any other driver using them in competition use. They do not fade under repeated hard breaking. Their only downsides are cost (maintenance included) and they take a lap or two to achieve optimum performance (much like the racing slicks someone who needs them will probably be using).

That's what I was thinking around $5000 for the set. Ford wouldn't pay anywhere near $30k for the set

Looks like ford didn't learn anything from the Z28 SALES.why pay 70k on a coupe while you can get a super car(z06)with about 10-15k more.thats my opinion but about the carbon wheels, how much weight did they save on thr car

Aren't the carbon discs lighter as well?

Indeed, in some cases up to 12lbs lighter per disc. They also don't corrode and could last a very long time compared to steel rotors.

I think that is also an advantage with carbon brake pads, they last longer.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I wonder if Chevy is going to use the new CTS-V brakes in the ZL1?

http://www.heraldrecorder.org/techno...news-20154314/

Quote:
The CTS-V is fitted with Godzilla’s own Brembos, vented 15.3-inch ferrous two-piece front rotors (steel cheeks and aluminum hubs) while the rears are 14.3-inch one-piece ferrous rotors. Cadillac executive chief engineer Dave Leone suggested that more exotic ceramic composite brakes—used because they shed heat more readily than steel rotors—would have, on balance, offered less stopping power and would have been more costly. Meanwhile, he said, the ferrous rotors were every bit as fade resistant.
Mr. Leone was saying something in a MotoMan interview about the split disc design allowing for more rapid heat loss and that is why the CTS-V won't experience brake fade. Who knows how true that is, but so far all the reviews I've seen suggest the car handles braking quite well through some rather high speed hot laps.

An F1 driver has different concerns than a person buying a production car and taking it to a track occasionally.

Carbon ceramic rotors are fragile and expensive to replace. They're marginally better than steel rotors and proper pads for track use. They make no sense on a car that doesn't spend the majority of its time on the race track. If they were a lot cheaper, then I would feel differently (because they weigh a lot less than steel rotors).

I feel the same way about the carbon fiber wheels -- completely unpractical for a car that doesn't live at the race track.

Unpractical? Is that a real word? I think the word you're looking for is impractical.

Steel rotors are fragile when subjected to repeated heating. How many track sessions do you think you will get on a set before they wrap or crack? A lot fewer than you would with carbon. But like I said before on a street car their value for performance isn't there. So I agree not really warranted.

Also don't think I've heard carbon rotors cracking except due to a manufacturing flaw.
