They could be testing two versions of the same car... Or... Two separate ones...

That would mean that the 1LE would be getting it's own unique hood (or the same as the ZL1), unlike now. That would be a shift, given that even the 2014-2015 Z28 didn't get a unique hood-it was the same as the SS.

Couple of thoughts:
1. Any chance this is actually the same car with different parts being tested? The cars look very similar. If they're testing setups, there's a chance they could be swapping aero bits to see real world results. Not sure how this overdone camo would affect it, but the I don't know what they're testing for. Could be something as simple as durabity. 2. I wonder if the ZL1 is going to get the new super-brakes GM has been touting on the CTS-V? Relatively inexpensive steel brakes that don't fade sounds almost too good to be true!

The reason I think 1LE and ZL1 is because the 1LE was a result of ZL1 testing. They took parts from the ZL1 to create the 1LE. So why not test them side by side. The hood argument is nullified by the fact that the SS and Z/28 shared a hood. The HiPo models may all share a hood different from the SS. That would explain the different sideskirts too. The ZL1 would have more aero than the 1LE. This would most likely be suspension and drivetrain testing. Aero would be done mostly in the wind tunnel. Can't test aero with all the padding on the body.

the rear of the noted second one seems to be sitting higher than the first with the mesh hood

I read an article about the 1LE prototype car. It wasn't developed side by side with the ZL1. It was a side project of some of the engineers. They just used ZL1 parts because they had access to them. There's no reason GM has to develop the 1LE at the same time, or even after, the ZL1.

I didn't see this, although I assumed it by my renders, about the rear fender blisters...
