Wireless Phone Charging

Anyone have anymore information on this? Chevy's website just states that it will be an incorporated charging mat that will grip the phone and keeps it into place and will be located "behind" the center console. I am assuming that there is some sort of pocket/slot in the back on the center console, might be kind of awkward to put the phone in and out of there. I just watched a video for 2016 Malibu, which has the rubber charging mat located behind the MyLink screen that flips up, in the storage bin. It has the new cooling duct which keeps the phone cool while charging, pretty cool feature and location. I am assuming that in the 2016 Camaro, it will not have the cooling duct since it is behind the center console. It would be cool if the MyLink screen flipped up in the Camaro as well and that is where it would be located. I know that the 2SS package it will be standard, not sure how it falls into the other trims.

"As we learned at Chevy's media event, the first CarPlay vehicles from the company will not include an upcoming iOS 9 feature -- wireless CarPlay support. Chevy's 2016 vehicles will require a user's iPhone to be connected via a Lightning cable. iOS 9 also includes new features that allow it to be more deeply integrated with in-car systems, letting car knobs control CarPlay functions, but it is not clear if Chevy's vehicles will take advantage of this upgrade when Apple's new operating system launches in the fall."

I hope this changes, because I'm tired of wires, and I will wait until they have wireless support before I order my car.

I am referring to wireless charging via a wireless charging pad...I couldn't care less about Apple and Carplay, huge anti-Apple person here!...plus I am an IT tech for 20 years so shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone...lol. I am looking forward to see what Android Auto will be and how it will work, but again that is different than wireless charging.

I don't know then, I just assumed it was going to be all integrated somehow and tossed up a link that I thought might be of some help. Carry on-

you can slightly see it in this photo, it is just behind the center console. It seems more accessible to the rear seat passengers.

Oh yeah, never looked at the picture that closely...it is kind of out of place, kind of an awkward place for it. I wish it was up front so it can be accessible easier.

The corvette slide down infotainment system with the charger behind it would have been sweet

This setup in the new upcoming Malibu is really nice, wish the Camaro would have something like this...

I really hope the wireless charging pad is not in the back seat. That makes it basically unusable.

Not necessarily, if you get android auto or carplay or mylink there is no need for the phone to be in sight. However I will agree that it is an odd location. I see why they put it there being they wanted to remove the e brake handle and not clutter the shifter and there is really no room above or below the vent and infotainment center.

Anyone heard about the charging rates for these GM pads? Few I have tried were very slow charging, making them nothing more than battery maintainers for low use situations, or just slowly discharging for high draw (like using it for NAV)

I think that's the point; trying to discourage people from using their phone while driving. As long as they put the hookups for android auto / apple carplay in the same location as the charging pad, no one should ever have to mess with their phone while driving.

I seriously doubt they care that much. They probably put it back there because the Malibu location is out due to the air vents, and the Corvette location is out due to the afterthought snap on radio.

The new Camaro appears to be all form over function when it comes to ergonomics. GM cared more about how the passenger side of the dash looked than how easy it would be to use the infotainment system, adjust the AC, and use auxiliary features such as the wireless charging mat.

Think that's a bit harsh for a car you haven't sit in and used. Ergonomics always has personal elements which make or break cars for people (as far as interiors).

With that said, I feel like behind the center console isn't the best spot. I would have gone for making the center console bigger and just putting it there, since thats where most people would put their if they had it hooked up to the car anyway.
