because then the developers have to build & maintain 3-4 different sets of upgrade paths for the NAV system
1) Android phone update 2) iPhone update 3) Random update path 4) USB update path cheaper to force everyone to use the USB update path. Why the vehicles don't come with a device specifically for updating, I don't understand (its because people would lose it and itd cost $400 to replace from the dealer, and no one wants that) |

How to update the devices is not the issue. Getting the OEM to put out updates is the real issue. There's a 4G antennae in the car already, OTA is the way to go anyway.

That feature should be include in the price of the car, there is no need to take it to the shop, there are so many solutions they just need to pick one. I agree with SuperSound, 4G update for free (or even $1 the file size shouldn't be more that) just as the os update on your phone is free from the carrier you have.

Even THAT can be programmatically made to work w/CarPlay with a little work on GM's part...

Just imagine what a disaster it would be if every time you need to update your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch applications, OS and firmware, you had to goto the Apple Store in person?!
If Apple can make OTA updates work, so can GM! As for a MyLink Applications Store -- who cares, as long as there is CarPlay, I should be able to get 95%+ of what I need from the iOS device on my car screen. That would be a good stand-in until GM gets their app act together. Quote:

Agreed, but doubt that will happen. Maybe in 5 years when Android Auto/Car Play use make the OEMs drop the idea of designing their own NAV.

Car Play/Android Auto is the way to go, plain and simple. Auto companies have been developing horrendous UI's on these screens for years, it's time to let the professionals do it. Smart for more companies to go to this format, takes a lot off of them. Most have one of those two types of phones anyway.

Agreed, android auto sealed the deal for me and put a cherry on top. Not against carplay, i just an android currently. On that note does any one know if carplay apps are only limited to messaging and music apps like android or not?

Well even in the latest iteration of CarPlay announced at Apple's WWDC this week, OEMs can now make CarPlay apps which control various vehicle functions! So that day is here now!

and in another article I was reading with interviews from the GM guys, they were pretty big on it just being a standard feature period, no cost, no upgrade. Yeah, Android Auto was such a big push for me in a decision. Something I have been waiting for for awhile.

Controlling functions is one thing, displaying app data from the phone to other display sources in the car is a bit different, but it does give hope. Interesting note at the bottom about wireless CarPlay being supported by the new update but doesn't say how. I also don't see wireless mirroring being very useful yet because of power draw. If you don't plug your phone in to keep charging, you will probably arrive at your destination with a near dead phone battery. GPS already draws a lot of power, BT not so much but then audio data doesn't use that much bandwidth. But wireless display and 2 way communication will definitely cause a big draw. Wireless Qi charging is slow and might not be able to prevent a draw from something like using NAV on your phone via CarPlay and Android Auto.

Just a few things from this thread that could be clarified.
8" screens will get Android Auto later in the model year. The official GM press release said existing '16 owners MAY get it via software update. Wireless CarPlay was announced by apple June 8th at the WWDC 2015 keynote. One of the articles I read said they asked and GM said wireless CarPlay support would be available in a few years. |

Another question is WHERE is the cable connection to the CarPlay system on the 6th Gen? I don't want to hide the iPhone in a hidden compartment, my preference is to also have it dash-mounted as the ProClip and similar mounts offer.
i.e. (5th Gen version):
