The very early pre-productions will be crushed as well as many if not most of the Captured Test Fleet. What is in the pictures are likely pre-pros. Those CTFs that can be brought up to sellable will be auctioned to Chevrolet dealers and they will have a unique VIN to distinguish them from regular productions and VIN 0001 will likely be auctioned with the proceeds going to charity.

One thing that I've thought of that would be kinda cool is if the cars destined for the crusher were acquired by a movie. Often in movies where the hero drive a single car for most of the movie, they need a dozen or so copies of a single make & model for all the various scenes (and a few to get destroyed in stunts). The trick would be matching up a movie with a soon to be released car (hard), and getting legal to sign-off on it (even harder)

Goal is for most or all CTF cars to be sold. Only if it is difficult to retrofit would they destroy them. They may also be rebuilt for future development work. In a few cases the retrofit may be hard to do but only cosmetic. They sold some Solstice convertibles to employees with some known minor issues.

I used the term pre-productions when I should have said pilot cars. My bad.

Mule - Built using the correct powertrain and chassis, but using a donor vehicle of similar size and weight that is generally modified to adapt to the powertrain an chassis. Confirms basic performance of the architecture and powertrain bits. Prototype - Built with parts off prototype tools, sometimes production. In a special facility other than the plant. Tended to focus on the parts and subsystems and vehicles for testing the design Pilot - Tests manufacturing tools, processes and trains operators. Parts usually grained. Used for additional product testing and evaluation Pre Production - CTF vehicles generally come from this build Regular Production - VIN 1 hoopla comes from this build. This is also includes an OK to ship event. This is why many of the 2010 units were held back or had special quality steps taken.

Cool article, thanks for sharing
Are production tours possible (like museum delivery for the Corvettes)? Say I order my car 1st week in January, build is scheduled for first week in March, would I be able to tour the plant that week?

As far as I know, BGAP is the only GM plant that has regular open to the public tours and the Buyers Tour. GM has opened plants for public tours in the past, but these have been one day events and seldom occur.
