I took Azteks on two long road trips. It was fine vehicle. Roomy, drove well, decent FE. It just was not an attractive vehicle. Sales were poor.
Not sure the original show car was much better IMO, but it was much more sporty than what went into production. But GM was forced to build it off the mini van architecture which led to some horrific lines. The FOD and floor had to be carried over which destroyed the show car look. Keep in mind one of the major criticisms of the Aztek was the gray plastic body cladding. This was a DIRECT COPY from the Honda Element. GM corrected this within a year but as they say the damage was done. Also keep in mind the Buick version of the Aztek (Rendezvous) actually sold pretty well and was for the most part considered a success. Vega will always hold a soft spot for me, it was my first car. You figure when you turn 16 and your parents give you a 3 year old car with 16,000 miles on the odo you are in pretty good shape. I replaced the head once and then the entire engine. Burned a quart every 100 miles or so. From what I understand, GM copied the aluminium block and cylinders from a Porsche design but GM left the top of the cylinders open for better coolant flow. If the engine got hot the cylinders warped. And the cooling system in the base car was crap and allowed this to happen. I heard if you got the HD cooling system the engine was actually fine. But as is often the case, GM fixed it with iron sleeves in the cylinders, but as they say, the damage was done. It was also built at an assembly plant that was historically a problem with a history of labor issues, so it was a bad car built in a plant that wasn't building quality cars. But for being one of the worst vehicles EVER...................it sold over 2 million copies. So it was a sales success, but sadly a crappy car around the time the Japanese were making their first in roads.

ofsseT INtrepid is a Dodge, ummm, not a GM product which is what this thread is titled.
to me the X body cars of 80s, (CItation, Skylark) were horrible pieces of junk. yeah, they started the front wheel drive craze, but they were junk. the aztek we all agree was horrible. i personally loved the Pontiac brand though. Bonnevilles, Trans Ams, Grand Ams, were all great cars. sorry to see them go |

![]() But again, it cites the Aztek as a "bad car" because it was ugly. No car is "good" just because it is a pretty car (DeLorean) but the only reason any of these folks can cite that the Aztek was "bad" is the vehicle's ugly looks. For such a bad vehicle, I would expect that more reasons than it's ugliness could be cited. If ugliness makes a car "bad" then why is not every Citroen 2cv ever made on the list? Ferrari made some hideous cars, too.

I didn't think it could hit 60 in 20 seconds if it was pushed off a cliff
