I have gotten out of at least three tickets by playing dumb and telling the truth. One was going the wrong way on an interstate on ramp, one for running a red light, and the last one was getting a seat belt ticket for doing 96 in a 70.

I was sitting at a red light late one night or early one morning, depends on your philosophy. The light stayed red for what seemed like 10 minutes. There were no cars coming or going in either direction the entire time. So I went through the light. I didn't get 100 feet through the intersection when red lights came on behind me. The cop was obviously sitting there, knowing the light was not working properly, waiting for someone to run the light. He asked me why I drove through the red light. Without looking at my watch, I said I thought it was optional at 2:45 in the morning. As I wasn't drunk and knew the time, he let me go. I still feel it was a trap set by the cops to catch drunks.

Why bother making up an excuse to a police officer? If you're not going to fight it, be honest. If you're going to argue about a ticket, do it in court and don't say anything to the officer.

Wow, old thread.

I haven't had a ticket in years. Last one was 2004. I was doing about 109, which was the speed limiter on the car

I was pulled over by a State Cop. He asked me why I was going so fast.

"No excuse sir"

Wrote me up for 75 in a 65.

Best video of a girl trying to get out of a ticket (I've seen it a couple of times on dashcam video shows): "But, officer, I heard that you guys don't give tickets to the pretty girls!"

The officer responds, handing her the clipboard: "That is correct, ma'am. Please sign by the X."

I still can't watch that one without laughing my ass off.

Not exactly an "excuse to get out of a ticket," but a while back, I was tailing a drunk, on the phone with 911, coordinating with CHP to get this jackwad. I gave regular updates on location and speed, and got CHP units to stage. I will admit that it was fun to be doing over 100 MPH, with CHP behind me, trying to catch up (he did eventually), and have no worries about being in violation.

(And there was still entertainment to come, as once the CHP lit him up, he tried to take the next freeway exit, but wasn't quite able to do so without rear- ending a car stopped at the red light... low speed, no injuries, but ol' boy still had to be poured out of the driver's seat, as walking was WAY too difficult. I felt no sympathy for that jackwad.)

Best way to hopefully get out of a ticket - honesty, without admission of guilt.

I tried the honesty thing. Driving down the highway doing 72 in a 70 zone. Got lit up by LEO. He asked if I knew why he stopped me. I told him I didn't have a clue. He said doing 72 in a 55 zone. I told him I didn't see the sign. I pointed back over his car and said that sign says 55. He waits just after the sign and writes people up as they pass it.

When the cop is pulling that one, nothing you tell him matters

Officer - "Why are you in such a hurry?"

Me - "I realized I forgot my wallet at home."

~few moments of silence, officer takes my insurance and registration back to his car. Comes back and says "don't ever let me catch you doing that again," and let's me go....

Yup. Sometimes you're just screwed. Your best bet then is to go to the courthouse and beg and plead. If that's not feasible, then you're stuck with it and the consequences.
