I have no problem with commonality between platforms, I think thats a good idea worth pursuing. But since a mouse & keyboard are the best way to do most things on a laptop or desktop (not to mention being far and away the most popular way) Microsoft should have included a secondary (traditional) menu system.

To me, it would be kinda like designing a car with steering wheel audio controls -and then removing the controls from the dash. While it may be a little more convenient for some, its much worse for others. Do both (with the slight increase in cost) and all customers are kept happy.

I've got 8.1. The button is there, but the old start menu isn't.

I never thought I'd say this but I miss Vista. I got my old computer just before Win 7 came out so I had to suffer through it for a long time. When it died, my new one came with 8

Again, my problem is not with the tiles, or the start menu or any of that stuff. My problem is I created my YouTube account under RubyCamaro5 and not my name because I don't want my drag race videos posted in my real name. I don't post them to Facebook only Youtube & here. Facebook is monitored by my employer, insurance companies, and information is shared way too widely. I do not want all my social media merged. AND I need to be able to access the Camaro club email without all those email addresses merging with my address book or this stupid computer trying to make the club email the primary email account for the new computer. That is what I need to get sorted out.

Ruby

Go to users
Select manage your account
Then under you name it should say something about change to local account
Do that and things will change. Your desktop short cuts will change but you should be able to put back what you want.

You will no longer be tied to that e-mail address for logging and e-mailing stuff in the OS.

I can use either the Start screen, or the old Start menu with no issues, both have advantages, both can be annoying. I find it amusing that people got so up in arms over the Start screen when all it really is, is a full screen version of the Start menu.

My home theater PC and my Tablet I love the Start Screen, the laptops and desktops, not as much.

The Youtube thing has nothing to do with windows 8. I have Windows 7 and I have the same issue.

The issue is Google. When they bought Youtube they gained access to everyone's Youtube account info and they just recently merged the databases. I'm still trying to find a way to separate my two accounts as well.

That sucks! If anyone figures out how to separate that Google-YouTube thing out pass it on. I still need to just access the Camaro club email account without linking it to my computer and all my personal stuff.

My husband & our Help desk folks were able to configure the laptop so I can do my work stuff on it.

For a long time they tried every time I logged onto YouTube to get me to change the account to my real name but I refused. I also get them & email trying to put my cell phone number on the account. Not going to happen. If I have to give a phone number to anything I give my work voice mail #.

If they require a phone number, use 615-555-1212.
