the ecoboost is Ford's option for People that don't tow/haul very often but still need a truck. The Ecoboost gives you the gas mileage of the mid range engines, but the towing power of the big 6.2 for when you need to haul/tow
The ecoboost is rated at 16/22 in a 2wd, the 6.2 is rated at 13/18 in a 2wd. Thats the way Ford chose to about it, they went the turbo small engine route. GMs new 5.3 is pretty impressive as well, giving very good MPG and still offering very impressive towing figures. Different strokes for different folks, similar to how lots of people like to argue O/H/V vs DOHC It's just my opinion, but if your towing something right at the max for either the GM or Ford often, you should be looking at a heavy duty |

I dont like the new looks but that 5.0 is a great motor. I miss my 2011 f150. It was one of my most reliable trucks and I used it alot. Traded it in to get my camaro but I sure as hell miss it. Ford has taken the lead with their trucks and stepped up their game that is for sure.

I couldn't agree more. People keep asking more and more of 1/2 ton trucks when the HD's and Superduty's are right there to do that very task. This explains why these truck have gotten so huge as well. We'd have better FE and performance if they weren't so big.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean if your going to tow like 11K pounds once or twice ok, a half ton can fit the bill. But if your going to tow towards the max ratings alot just get a heavy duty thats what they are built for!!!!!!! |

Another side effect of the constant more, more, more mentality was then loss of the small truck (S-10 & Ranger) do to ever increasing size and payliad requirements. I remember that at the end of its life Ranger with the big v6 and max tow package was pushing well into similarly equipped F-150 prices. This all nut gave the segment to the Japanese. Now even they have grown substantially.
I'm not trying to take anything away from the new "mid size" trucks but at what...6in narrower, 3in lower, and less than a 1000lb difference between the two...they're over 90% of what the Silvy/Sierra are. Thusly what's the point?

I'm hearing more defensive posturing than hating.
To say Ecoboost is a game changer when it is no more than a DI Turbo is a bit strong. If you want to say putting smaller displacement DI Turbo engines in PU trucks is a game changer we can have that discussion. Although many will believe the Ford hype it is at a basic level the technology GM got to production first. Widespread application of smaller displacement DI turbos goes very much to Ford. Also I have heard that the Ecoboost in the current Ford F150 doesn't pass some of the industry towing tests in the heat. Not saying it's common but there are heat problems in very severe towing conditions. I have no hate for the DI turbo engine. Loved it in my Saturn and love it in our ATS. Awesome engines. All Ford has done is go smaller displacement and far more widespread application in Fusion and even Fiesta.

isn't the ecoboost and gm's new 6.2 rated very similar for fuel economy? but the 6.2 blows it away in power and rated towing capacity. in the 2v's they would blow the plugs right out of the heads. in the 3v's they would seize in solid.

I have the 3.15 LSD in my Ecoboost too.. I WISH Ford still made a LSD in an FX model.. unfortunately we have to deal with the E-Locker..
on a side note, my Ecoboost is mildly modified and I've raced every daily driven truck out there (of course not some drag monster), whether stock or not.. not ONE truck has me on top end.. they may pull me out the hole, but by 70 mph I've passed them.. my truck has 22's and I can chirp second on 89 or 93 octane tune.. |
