Though I agree 'shit happens'........for it to go on as long as it did is what gets my goat. And even more recent, I believe (dont quote me) 2000-2004 Crown Vics also had 'exploding' gas tank issues. I know because our entire fleet of police cars had to go to Ford to have a brace or plate installed. Apparently, in a rear end collisons, as the tank was pushed forward, it made contact with some, either suspension or body bolts, thus rupturing the tank. We (at least a large number of us) realize these are man made vehicles.......as are planes, trains, busses, bicycles, skate boards, etc. They break, usually at the most inopportune times. And sometimes bad things happen. But knowing a problem exsist and not acknowledging it, and/or at least making some kind of effort to correct it, IMO, is inexcusable.
But, I, you, all of us, still buy cars, still get on planes, usually with our heads up our asses, brains in our smart phones, believing the world is right and nothing will happen to us. Aint gonna happen. We are an imperfect race in an imperfect world. Ok, thats the beer talking I'll stop while I'm still making sense

There was once a website called flamingfords.com. I guess they probably got sued into taking it down. Crown Victorias to this day have the same fire issues and many cops have been injured or killed because of the crown vic. They even installed a fire suppression system in the crown vic to combat the problem.

This is not news, all auto manufactures determine if it's worth the recall based on the risk of lawsuits. Also if you look at history, the media blew up (pun intended) the controversy over the pinto. There weren't as many deaths as the media would make you think. I still believe Ford should be held responsible, but just as responsible as anyone else who manufactures a defective vehicle.

The corvair was later proven in a government investigation just as safe or even safer as any other small car of the same time period.
Although many still persist in the myth the Corvair was discontinued because of safety it was not. It is Ironic because it was driven out of the market by the Ford Mustang, that was cheaper to produce and had better performance. Which turned out to be more dangerous than the Corvair was. And if you remember I think it was NBC that rigged the tanks to explode in their "tests". Quote:
Many GM cars of the same era had their gas tanks in the same location but they were under the trunk floor therefore not as much a safety hazard.

A 36 Ford coupe had worse safety flaws than any mustang. Would I like to buy a 36 Ford? You are darn tooten. Go back to any car manufacturer all the way up to the 50s and I bet they still were less safe than a 66 Mustang. Its called live and learn, and build upon mistakes. Its also called progress.

It's definitely a dick move by Ford, but I wouldn't say this kind of decision making was exclusive to them. There weren't any meaningful safety regulations in the 60's, so you saw this type of thing from every manufacturer.

We learn from our mistakes and because of automobile technology today, most vehicles are generally considered safe. With all the safety regulations the government puts on automobiles manufacturers now, companies are always testing and trying new technology. A good example of change is the gas tank itself. Most, if not all, gas tanks are made of composite material (plastic if you will). What the OP was concerned about is the process that Ford went about the whole incident. It's his feelings and you gotta respect that.
