but but but, the "simulator" said the ZL1 will beat the new GT500 hands down. How can that be? The simulator doesn't lie!

Al Oppenheiser...

You assume they're/we're all wrong by default. Which is fair, I guess: setting expectations low will usually result in the greatest happiness - a mentality I can appreciate 100%! However...if they're not wrong -- what reason do they have to hold back? Much more interesting to guesstimate now and have a little fun in the process?

EDIT: On the other side of the same coin -- if a person is confident Al and the "ZL1 evangelists" (don't know what that means) ARE wrong...why try so hard to stop them from falling flat on their faces when the '13 Mustang is released? If I were you, I might think it would be fun to see them humiliate themselves.

It doesn't...when you're a qualified powertrain engineer working for the world's largest automaker (and the resources that come with it). It seems like everyone keeps overlooking that little detail as though they used Forza 4 or something....

I think Oppenheiser has just got to caught up in the whole deal.

Obviously he cares deeply about the ZL1 and his creation. He should be proud.

I don't think he should have came out and said some of the things he has, but I would rather have someone start "swinging" rather than just put there head down and pout.

It's numbers like that, that tempt me to get a gt500 instead of an ZL1 when I upgrade in a few years but in the end i will probably stay true to the camaro

A great point! And it's worth remembering...it's not as though he was bullying his way to the microphones to say his piece...someone asked - and he answered candidly.

I thought it was clever...had he not done so, I guarantee the ZL1 would have been wrongly dismissed without much of a thought by many people. To me, it's the equivalent of an: "Over here, don't count us out!"

Nothing wrong with being confident at all. However, you would think there would be smarter ways to show confidence in your product. Why not just let the car speak for itself when it comes out? That way IF the outcome is, lets just say not as expected, he and GM dont look like a bunch of morons. Now by his statements its all or nothing. What does he say IF the Shelby comes out and it bitchslaps the ZL1 in all categories? Its not that unlikely considering the stats the Shelby is bringing to the table. Ford, IMO, definately played this whole trash talking thing alot smarter. I saw recently that Al said the ZL1 will be quicker from 0-60. Well, its been widely reported that the Shelby is knocking off consistent 3.7's 0-60 which we know from tests already done that the ZL1 cant do, so now what?..

I think we shouldn't brush off the GT500 unless we start seeing a delayed release. Ford has seen what the ZL1 can do. They would be foolish to release a car that's not just competitive but holds a good many advantages. That being said I don't think there is enough days in a year for them to catch up handling wise but to pull ahead in a quarter mile shouldn't be too tough with 650 HP. There has to be a ceiling to the horsepower wars, I just hope its reached by the manufacturers before the govt brings down the hammer and I think the ZL1 will be leading the way.

If Chevy is leading the way in HP it will be with the Vette not the Camaro.

I know the guys working on the Camaro team making them hate they have a glass ceiling.

The new Corvette will beat a new Shelby thats a guarantee you are crazy if u think that Ford will EVER build a factory 800hp Shelby. The ONLY reason a 650hp one is being built is due to the current 5th Gen Mustang coming to an end and competition from the new ZL1. Sorry but the Mustang stock for stock wont be beating a Corvette EVER plus the new Corvette is rumored to be weighing in less than 3,000 lbs lets see a Mustang do that. Yeah the Mustang will lose weight too but the new Camaro and it will likely weigh the same meaning the Mustangs advantage will be gone where it will have to rely on its design for sales.

I'd rather go with logic and hard evidence than posturing, simulating, etc. 0-60 and 1/4 mile are really in the GT500's bag whether some believe it or not. Come on Ford, bring it!!

You have to give credit to Ford. The GT500 specs are impressive. Most here are going to defend the Camaro because this is a Camaro forum. If the specs were reversed, people here would be talking about how the Camaro is more powerful and Ford is behind. I'm sure both are going to be great, and I'd be proud to own either.
