I remember that fire... Some friends who lived in springerville lost their home..

I had already joined the Navy by then but one of the guys in my squadron still had family there.

That was a bad deal.

Yeah it was. I have a store in Show Low and you could see the fire in the distance. Most people thought I was just taking photos of a storm... It was at least 200 miles long from what I could just see from the roof of our building.

Found three of my photos from 6/8/11:

1. From the 260 rolling east out of Overgard. The entire cloud in the background is the smoke trailing north east.
2. From Whipple and White Mountain Road, you can see how close the smoke cloud is.
3. From the US 60 right before Salt River Canyon, you can see the southern portion of the fire.

Wow thats nuts. Well the fire areas here are mostly near Austin or ranches, so far 400 houses have burnt since 11am yesterday.

There was another big one called the Rodeo/Chediski fire back in June 2002 that one was about 460,000 acres. They had to evacuate about 30,000 people for that fire. About 400 houses burned in that one and you could see it from Phoenix.

Thanks, I just worry because they are near my sister in Austin and about 20 miles north of my house and it just sucks seeing people displaced like this.

Thats just crazy. That must have been huge. Idk how many people they have evacuated but its quite a few. They are calling for anyone in the state of TX with ANY firefighting experience to show up.

That sucks to hear, its probably going to be a lot of evacuating given its close to Austin. At least our fires were remote and had lots of coverage from the forest service. I drive by where that fire was 2 or 3 times a week and it still hasn't recovered after 9 years.

After 9 years? Wow. Well we had our forestry/fire budget scaled back 30% by our wonderful govenor, i bet he is regretting that now. Who knows whats gonna happen, but its supposed to get worse before it gets better.
