My dad is VERY lucky

So I think my dad may be one of the luckiest people. So he came down to visit and we were all sitting around and he told us the story how he missed 2 flights that crashed and was on one that was struck by lightning and had to make an emergency landing. The first flight was Allegheny Airlines Flight 853. My dad was suppose to be on the flight but ended up missing it. He got to the airport late and by the time he arrived the plane was being pushed back from the gate. He made a big stink to the gate attendant as to how come they could not pull the plane back to the gate. Allegheny was nice enough to get him on a later flight and he sat around waiting. A while later a news flash came on the tv reporting that flight 853 had crashed and there were no survivors.

second flight was Eastern Air Lines Flight 212. Dad was traveling with a buddy to a party but they were leaving on different days. My dads friend wanted to leave earlier so they traded tickets (back then you could do that). Flight 212 crashed while trying to land in fog. Dad's friend was killed.

The last flight he was flying home to South Bend IN and his flight was struck by lightning causing electrical issues and they had to make an emergency landing. He says he can still remember how cold it was landing in a storm and having to take there shoes off to slide down the emergency slides and into the foam they sprayed on the runway.

lol now I will be nervouse whenever he has to fly. But I also truly be leave someone has been looking out for him. Those are some crazy odds.

This story is really incredible.....considering how safe flying is and the thousands of flights each day in the world. I don't think I've ever heard of 1 person missing 2 fatal commercial flights simply because of a last second change.

I was once on a plane that had a "runway incursion." Basically a tanker truck pulled onto the runway as my plane was landing in Charlotte October 1995. I remember seeing the truck pull on the run way out the window as we descended to about 50 feet from it. The pilot pulled some quick moves and took us back into the air, the best part was when he got on the intercom and told us what he thought of the tanker driver. Given that the tanker was full of jet fuel that probably would have been a long slow roasting death. As they say...the illusion of safety.

I was on a plane struck by lightning once... we were on the runway about to take off. It scared the crap out of me. I saw it hit the wing out my window and the the crack was SOOOOOO loud. You should have seen everyone jump! Most of them didn't know what happened until the Pilot came over the intercom telling them we had to go back and get on another plane.

yea most people don't know that modern planes are very protected against lightning strikes. On average every commercial plane will get struck by lightning each year it is flying
