What was your First Build?
I was looking through some old pictures the other day and stumbled on to this......
The first car I ever owned (bought in 1981) and the first car I ever modified, a 1974 Olds Omega S. This is the Olds version of the much coveted 1974 Nova. It is a hatch back and came with a big block 350 Rocket, four barrel carb and 3 speed automatic. For the life of me I can't find any pics of the finish product. When finished, the usual suspects could be found, headers, dual exhaust with thrush mufflers, Holley 650 double pumper four barrel carb, Edelbrock Highrise Intake, Fireball Transmission with shift kit and a set of rear end gears, I want to say 4:11's. I did manage to get it into the low 14's in the quarter mile. If nothing else, this makes me truly appreciate the performance that is found in our amazing Camaro. I also found this video, it is a bit long but the spec's make me smile and chuckle a bit (1/4 mile ET 18 seconds).

The first car I ever owned (bought in 1977) and the first car I ever modified, a 1967 Camaro. Black with white rally stripes, 327 2 barrel with a powerglide. And yes, it had a split bench seat. Rebuilt the motor in Auto Shop in high school. Ended up staying another semesters taking 2 Auto classes just to finish the car. Cant remember my 1/4 mile times but I think we were talkin 16's. Back then if you broke into the 12's you were a legend. lol

My first build was a 68 camaro SS. Bought it with no motor. I had a large journal steel crank 327 out of an old vette. Put some 64cc camel hump heads on it, single plane intake and a 650 holley double pumper. She'd pull great up to about 7000 rpm. Had TH400 trans with 4:11 gears. Used to get rubber in all three gears....lol
Rebuilt the mill myself. Sold it after a few years to get married, for a measely 5K. the wife also had a 73 Chevelle SS. Haven't seen one since, they're pretty rare these days.....sigh |
