Oh yeah. They loose money on every Volt they sell, I think. And will for a year or two. toyota went through the same thing with the prius, though.

In a weird way...high gas prices may actually save the performance car in the long-term.....

We aren't talking about "Limited Edition IPHONE's", we're talking about a product that we rely upon for day to day life. A product that has an affect on the price of everything we purchase.

Who buys jewelry? Even if you do, EVERY merchant will negotiate a price with you.

And your beef eating analogy makes no sense at all... unless you're suggesting that the hippies eat all of the cows, and that we stop raising them all together. Because cows feed solely upon "oxygen producing plants"... and they release their by-product into the atmosphere.
Lol wut?

It's a stretch, I'll admit that up front.

By serving as an incentive to develop alternative fuels like ethanol, high-cost gasoline is actually ensuring there will be an infrastructure affordable fuels for internal combustion engines in the near, mid, and distant future.

Of course, this all assuming that entrepreneurs aren't punished to do so as they are now or will probably become so.

I wouldn't say they're being punished, in fact the opposite argument could be made in light of certain ethanol-production mandates back in '07...but they're certainly not getting as much help as others, that's for sure.

I was talking about entrepreneurs in general, in which case I'd love to see the idiot make that opposite argument lol.

I totally agree with Dragoneye's opinion. Most people tend to keep their point of view in a two-meter-radius, everything they complain about is what THEY are missing and how much money THEY have to spend on something. That's the same all over the world. Oh damn, now somebody will shout "communism alert!!!", but that's not what it is about. As everywhere in life, the truth is for sure somewhere in the middle between oil companies making money, avoiding future ecological collapses, the car industries's way of technology increasement and so on. But to reduce to the point: I think that what now is processing (the development of hybrids and electric powered vehicles) is the logical result of the increasing gas prices. We are just at the beginning of that road, let's wait what will come up in the next years.

If the US stopped importing from other countries and only used what we have here, it would last us 3-4 years at our current consumption rate. Even if we only imported half of what we use, that's still less than 10 years. We also get the majority of our oil from Canada, with Venezuela and Saudi Arabia being number 2 and 3. We don't get near as much from the Middle East as people like to think.

I'd die for prices (undoubtedly for a gallon?) over here...

Diesel (for the Range Sport) tomorrow was at €1.30 (that's over $1.5) for a liter...

Gasoline (allthough we only have 95 and up here), is at €1.50+/litre...

Exactly

Same as when people ask 'how much does she/he/it consume", I always say "when the tank's emtpy, I fill it again"...

I have noticed 99 PERCENT of car owners feel this exact same way.

I never see any indications that people care about gas prices.

ESPECIALLY when someone driving a new 5500 pound Chevy Suburban floors it and drives past me like they are drag racing. (which happens to me daily.)

NOBODY cares. (not where I live)
