There were also stories that it was caused by a French nuclear weapon ...

Can you imagine the effects a 7+ magnitude quake would have on that region?

Hell, if we had an "Earthquake Weapon," Chavez wouldn't be able to make a statement at all.

i don't want to even know what kind of weapons exist these days. hopefully that one is truly imaginary

Richter scale increases in an exponential manner (regarding power of the quake). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale

one question, why dominican republic didnt feel anything?? its 7+ god dam it its not 4 or 5
theres something fishy and we can cause that and we need to test its effect some where and islands are the easiest to do so, we have all the tec to do so, subs drills and bombs,
its like the bio weapon program that when the public new about nixon was forced to cancel it and tell all ppl its gone, but 1992 in iraq who used it???? we did and we still work on it, there is no need to let you or me know what they r doing

its 7+ god dam it its not 4 or 5 '7.0-7.9 Major Can cause serious damage over larger areas.' Thats off of the wiki link I included Over large areas, and as it was a 7.0 that range probably only extends 25 miles or so

yeah, but a 4.5 isn't anything but your shelves shaking a little bit. So setting off a more powerful nuke may indeed produce a more powerful earthquake. But if that was the case here, it would have been detected. This quake's epicenter originated 5 miles below the surface of the Earth.... not exactly a depth we can drill to. Again, if you pay attention to the news it was stated that this area was overdue for an earthquake as it sits on a MAJOR FAULT LINE.

Now, I'm not saying you should blindly accept everything the media says (as that would be unwise), but there are enough different sources stating this that I can accept the findings.

At the surface, the energy released in an 7+ magnitude earthquake is equivalent to a very large nuclear bomb, equal to the largest ever detonated. However, there is currently no known method to release all that energy in the form of a shockwave. In a nuclear explosion its released mainly as heat. Super-secret doomsday weapons are pure science fiction, with emphasis on fiction. An earthquake weapon would be dependent upon the discovery some way to first generate the waves (like the discovery of nuclear fission led to the first nuclear bombs). On top of that, if it was a test of an earthquake weapon why not target it against an unpopulated pacific island instead of a poor nation with millions of people? It just makes no sense.

And the notion that it was a nuclear detonation, buried deep underground is equally preposterous. First, it would need to be several times larger than the largest nuke ever detonated because its underground. And second, someone would have made a huge announcement. Most highly developed nations can detect earthquakes and nuclear explosions (even underground ones) and know the difference between the two. Using a similar line of thought, the Soviets indirectly proved that the Apollo moon landings were not a hoax ... they could intercept the radio transmissions coming from the moon and would have said something if things didn't match up.
