MSD wires = Huge fail since Holley bought them.
I have been a huge MSD wire fan for 40 years, had nothing but success with them.
Then Holley bought them, we were living off the original left over stock in the warehouses for roughly a year, then we started seeing unexplained misfires. We were testing them with a simple Ohm meter and finding a bad wire here and there. Now we are seeing 6 out of 8 bad right out of the box. Sorry Holley You ruined a good thing, MSD wires are Trash. This forced us to look elsewhere. We contacted Moroso because they always have had a great wire but didn't have good fitment for the LS and LT. We sent them our specs and they build them for us now to our specs. We are 8 months in and every wire is perfect! They are doing extremely well in very high powered road race cars which is the perfect test for any wire. We are using them in all of our builds and will carry our logo from here on out. We even have a specific wire for Magnuson 2650 cars, much shorter since the coils are moved down. Ted.

Do you use heat sleeves on the Moroso wires?
I have actual MSD wires on my car, they sit pretty close to the headers and do not have a heat sleeve. I had no idea Holley bought them so thank yor for sharing this information

I believe the MSD buy out was 10-11yrs ago. Unfortunately, private equity is buying up all the companies. BTR sold out to Burn Out Brands who bought TSP back in 2019. Honestly, it's all going to shit. "As part of the MSD Group, brands acquired included MSD Ignition, Mr. Gasket, Accel, Superchips, Edge, Racepak, Mallory, Hays, Quick Time, and Lakewood".
I will say Speed Engineering wires are pretty good for the money. The headers suck but the wires are good. I have had a set on my Yukon for a few years now and no issues. I have had them off/on a couple times. Recently swapped the SE headers out for Arh with high flow cats...buy once cry once.

Bummer, we always use these wires with headers.

In some cases we are using 1800 degree DEI sleeves. It is imperative that the sleeves do not touch the headers or the wires will toast. This is the part that everyone misses. We get lots of cars in here with heat sleeves laying on the header tube and the wires are cooked.

Ngk used to make really good wires. I haven't looked into that since I've transitioned into american cars. But maybe worth a shot.

Any comment about the OE wires and how they stack up against the claimed to be perfromance wires?
To my understanding and experience (as an Electrical engineer) - as long as the resistance specs are adhered to by the manufacturer and the insulation is sufficiently durable to the heat exposed to, the wires should work just as good and as expected. |

Stock wires are good but a lot of times they're not the right angled boot for certain headers and they make contact with the primaries. Several years back CSP racing was partnered with stainless works to make their own in-house headers that cleared stock wires. Now they use kooks and I don't know if it's still the same deal or not but the moral of the story is it comes down to fitment and heat resistance with headers. Also stock wires look kind of boring. nice looking wires dress the engine up.

But we are not dealing with stock cars. Factory wires are fragile and don't play well with removal and reinstallation especially for guys with big hands LOL. As king said header clearance is a big problem with Stock wires.

Also odd factors like headers with cats after them get hotter than headers with no cats

Couple items for good housekeeping I feel the need to mention and reiterate:
- At no point is it EVER a great idea to allow the wires with heat sleeves on them to touch headers. That is a recipe for disaster and will require prompt replacement of said wire. - Things have definitely not been the same in the automotive game as far as parts QA/ QC since these singular corporate entities have been buying up all of the parts brands. This is why I'm very adamant at this point about purchasing from independent companies that are stateside based before I purchase from one that makes stuff overseas. USUALLY there tends to be a much better adherence to quality given that since the companies are smaller, their entire reputation is at stake if they are getting badmouthed by one or. A few customers so they make sure that their stuff is top notch before it ever leaves their facility. - NGK wires definitely used to be awesome and fit very well if not were a 1/1 direct replacement/ fitment over factory stuff. Given what I spoke of above, I don't know if that has changed in the last decade (I believe it has actually because I think that they recently got acquired by some other BS company and I noticed that as I was browsing their website for spark plugs specs), but I would be leery about purchasing from anyone outside of Moroso, GPI, and Granatelli. There may be a few others but those are the big ones that I know about.

The Granatelli wires have been excellent so for in my experience. I’ve been running them for 4 years now after the stock wires quickly crapped out once I put headers on.
