Serial to wideband cable
Is a serial to wideband cable not sold as one unit?
I had to watch a couple videos last night on it and found all the info i need to make one. I just didn't see where anyone sells it already built. I guess wideband to usb through a serial cable would be more what I'm building. Last edited by bishopts; 04-01-2026 at 11:44 AM. |

If you are running an AEM 30-0300 like I do, I had to make the cable for it so I could ultimately hook up to my laptop. It's somewhat of an obscure tool, what with the semi recent move over the last 7-8 years to direct OBD reporting via CAN data if I remember correctly, so good luck finding one commercially made for sale. I documented the whole thing a while back in another forum, and ultimately transferred this set up to the Camaro.
The way I had it set up from the wideband itself I hooked up the main harness to the back of it (obviously). That let out an array of wires, but the ones that obviously concerned me were power, ground and serial TX (red, black, and blue). I had a RS-232 connector from a previous wideband that was junk (Innovate) that I used to create a custom wire harness, pretty basic stuff to make once I got all the wiring nailed down. After I hooked up both ends, I then had to strip the wiring on the end of one side and then linked up two grounds together (which hooked up to chassis ground) and a singular power wire which served as the serial TX data which I then hooked directly up to the harness coming off the wideband. From there I had to buy an RS-232 to USB conversion cable off the Internet and then hooked it all up. From wideband to laptop, all of that made into one singular USB to hook up which I still use today. The only thing I have changed since taking this photo is the converter to a longer one which has a 6 foot cord which also threads to the other adapter now as well for reasons I'll touch on in the next sentence. Make sure you buy a converter that has an FTDI chip set, otherwise you'll go clinically insane chasing your tail in trying to figure out why it won't show up on HP Tuners. The one you see in the photo was using some other junk Chinese knock off chip set and was dropping out wideband reporting at initial log and sometimes even during a log even if a signal was fully established and running. Hopefully that helps, if not, here is a photo of the harness I made. If you have a different wideband using serial data I'd imagine the concept is about the same. It's just about figuring out which wire is which.

Yea that's what I'm trying to make. I have an aem 30-0334 that i picked up for my camaro, it has a datalink connection that will work fine on my car, but i need to get this 99 SS tuned and i need a serial connection for it. I do have a prolink+ wire for my mvpi3, but I've read that it switches the signal between digital and analog a couple of times and throws off the final signal recived to the laptop.

Yeah the F Body's definitely lack CAN so that is a prime candidate for this mod. Well, here is your solution! If you have any other questions about it just let me know, though admittedly making the set up for this was one of the easiest things I have ever done for a vehicle. Someone with your knowledge I doubt will have a hard time as well.

Sounds like you got the right idea. I don't know of a serial to USB converter that currently uses USB C instead of the standard old school rectangular USB style plug so ya got me there, but if you can think of it, the chances are usually pretty good that it exists on the market somewhere. Also, I see you are using a UEGO. What AFR sensor are you using on that thing? Bosch LSU 4.9?

How's that been working out for you? Switching out the wideband every 3 days or what? Lol.

Ive never installed it. I got it with the intention of putting it in my camaro. But since my car is already tuned and I'm happy with it i had the intention of putting it in my ats that I'm building the engine for. But now i need it to get the 99 camaro tuned and then remove it.

Oh I gotcha now. Okay. Well hey, in the future if you ever do run a wideband on a fairly regular basis you may want to consider switching that dumb Bosch out for a Denso. I promise it'll last you years instead of days.

Yea i tend to lean away from bosch at all costs for o2 sensors. Usually NTK or denso, which I'm fairly confident they are the same sensors. I just don't have a lot of experience with aftermarket wideband sensors.

234-5137 Denso That's the one you want when your Bosch goes under spectacularly on you for no reason or without notice. Lol.
