Smoked the clutch - now what
I'll admit I screwed up and have probably done some damage. My question is how much and what should I do about it now?
My rear tires are at their end of life and I wanted to do a few burnouts before putting on the new ones. I've driven within restraint so I've never attempted a burnout with this car before. I engaged the line lock, however, I smoked the clutch pretty good before I realized what was happening. It seems to shift okay but smells really strong. Should I take it in to be looked at and what could I expect if it needs to be repaired for costs? |

Sounds like you glazed it. The smell will go away. If it's shifting ok I wouldn't jump to replace it just yet.

I agree with beowulf556. I'd drive it easy for a while to see how the clutch holds and shifts. It should improve. If not, then I'd budget for an OEM replacement or an upgraded Triple Disk from Monster. I did this upgrade a few months ago and love it.

If it's not slipping or making noise you probably just cooked (glazed) some of the friction material. It may need to wear a bit before it grabs as well as it did pre-cooking.
Your main trouble would be: 1) You got it so hot it partially shattered and now you have friction material getting tossed around. 2) It grabs irregularly, shocks the mechanism, and breaks metal parts. |

For me, the biggest difference was going with the ultra lightweight flywheel which helped me save 17pounds over the OEM dual disk. That is the part I was most worried about. Honestly, I prefer it. You do need to give the car a little more gas at a stop light due to the reduction in rotational mass, but after that, shifting feels so much faster. I would not change a thing.

Interesting that it uses a LUK friction disc. That's a major supplier for oem parts, i guess aftermarket sources from them too. Was the lightweight flywheel nessisary for your built? Or was it the only option for that clutch set?

Good question, it was not necessary, just an option I really wanted to try. A few people told me I would regret it, and a few people told me they loved them, so I went with the ladder, and have no regrets.

Any issues with active rev match or does the computer just drive to RPM such that it doesn't make a difference? |

I appreciate the feedback from everyone. After letting it sit for a day I took it out for a drive and shifting seems pretty close to normal. Starting off in first seems like it needs a little more gas to get going smoothly but that's the only thing I've noticed paying close attention to each shift now. I'm not hearing any unusual noises. It seems I may not have caused any serious damage, only shortened the life. The Monster Triple S looks like a nice option for a future replacement/upgrade.

Curious as to what rpm didn’t spin the tires, and smoked the clutch? Did you just drop the clutch at too low an rpm. Just wondering, as I have never tried the line lock on mine yet either.

I would guess dragged the engagement out more than dumped it. Once you do that its harder to get the stationary part moving than it is to slip across it. Its basically brake fade but in the clutch.

As others have said, probably just glazed the clutch disc. Pretty common thing to do. Drive it for a while and will likely wear the glaze off and work normally after 50-100 miles. If it doesn't get better, then time for a new clutch.
