2.5 swap

This is the side by side comparison of the 2.5 non turbo and the 2.0 turbo block. Im going to tear down this 2.5 and rebuild it with a 2.0t head. Ive just got to drill out the turbo oil and coolant flange areas.

The 2.5 is from a malibu that blew the head gasket.
The 2.0 is from an ATS that was smoking but ran fine.

They were both going to the scrap so i figured why not have some fun with it. If i get it all sorted out then i will put it in my ATS. Most anything i learn and share from it should carry over to the camaro 2.0.

In theory I'm increasing displacement by 25%, so horsepower should increase pretty much the same as long as the boost pressure stays consistent.
So 275hp to 346hp.

I have never taken the LKW engine apart before. I was pretty sure it's the same basic design as the LTG but i wasn't sure if they made them open deck for cooling reasons. Luckily it's a closed deck block.

Verified all the same oil and coolant passeges are here between the LTG and LKW.
The stroke definitely bigger. It's pretty much going to be a LTG with a stroker kit. I didn't realize that the saleen S1 runs this same setup. 450hp 400lbft. Im pretty sure there is more to that engine than this one.

So there’s definitely more to that but understand your premise. Your turbo can’t magically produce 25% more airflow without getting outside its efficiency island so IATs can get out of hand if so. What usually happens in situations like this is the engine becomes more of a torque monster in the mid range and you make similar horsepower numbers up top.

Now I admittedly don’t know anything about the 4 cylinder turbo and its size so maybe there’s more headroom available than I know about. But it’s always fun to talk theory.

I was explaining that to a coworker today. I'm going to try and see how the stock turbo does but i have a feeling the volume will start falling off at higher RPM for sure.

How different are the blocks? Can't the 2.5 crank be put into the LTG? The have the same 86mm bore, correct?

The bore is 88mm vs 86mm.
The crank and rods could be put into the LTG and use LTG pistons. Or bore the sleeves and use the LKW parts.
The LTG is 9.5:1
The LKW is 11.3:1

I was going to measure the head gaskets to see if the LTG uses a thicker head gasket to lower compression, but i couldn't go to work today because my son is sick.
It could potentially make more power on less boost, or it can shatter the connecting rods. No one really knows i guess.

One of my favorite things about ecotec engines is how they build the bracing for the crank. Its annoying to take off but it makes all the caps and block work together.

Fractured powdered metal rods and a forged crank.

I love this kind of thing. Definitely a fun idea for sharts and giggles.

Will be watching your progress and definitely curious how this turns out!

This is an odd hole to try and drill. It's pretty deep and for some reason it's threaded close to the surface.
I'm going to go ahead and move to pulling the LTG block down and send it i get the cylinders bored to 88mm

Its been on the back burner for a few months but i finally took the block to the machine shop.

For all you girls that complain you can't fit your golf clubs in the trunk, i put an engine block in mine.
