MCS Coilover Remote Reservoir Mounting

Welp guys,

I have to fall on my sword. I once slammed anyone who replaced the DSSV with other coil over options. Here i am 2 years later and I've reached the limits of the DSSV. I'ver routinely destroyed Front and rear fender liners carrying more than 1.4Gs while running the Pirelli DH slicks.

I am 2.5 seconds off of SCCA race winning lap times on the DSSV. I'm looking at the MCS kit with the remote reservoirs.

Would any one of you running that setup have any recommendations on where to mount those remote reservoirs? Can you post up some pics. I would like to have a game plan before the suspension arrives over the winter. I'll be going with the GTR spring rates.

Not sure how long the hoses are on the MCSs but I mounted my Penske reservoirs in the engine bay in front of the shock tower for the fronts and behind the rear wheel between the fascia and exhaust heat shield for the rears. I used an existing hole in the front and drilled the pinch weld in the rear to mount the brackets.

Brilliant! Thank you sir!

What made you go with Penske?

Joe (owner) at Phoenix racing offered to do a custom Penske setup for me but that would be just shy of $10k. His son Andrew is 15 time SCCA champion. I've been debating if I should do that or get into the MCS and save the $3000.

After seeing what my friend went through with dealing with his MCS supplier and then the hassle he had getting the dampers rebuilt, I decided to go with a guy local to me that I also race with. He builds, rebuilds, and tunes Penskes as a side job. And many of the national champs in the region use him for suspension work. It was quite a bit more expensive but knowing I have someone I can call on a moments notice to help me out is quite reassuring.

If I were to do it again, I probably wouldn't go the 3 way route, but I would go with Penske again. If you can swing it, going with someone close to you who can make changes and dyno the dampers is worth it.

Man, I had not considered that. Funny enough, Penske is not too far from me and I had them rebuild a motorcycle shock in the not too distant past. They turned it around within a week's time. I had assumed MCS would be similar, but I guess not.

I guess if I did go the Penske route, I would have Phoenix behind me for support and we often attend the same Open Track events where they're testing customer builds.

I was thinking 2-way (double) adjustable with remote reservoir. I could see myself getting lost with all the extra adjustability of the triple.

Based on what I'm hearing it seems like Penske is the more logical choice, taking long term support in mind. ...I guess the question now is, how important to me is that initial $2,000-$3,000 in price difference.

It was just over 2 weeks for his rebuild through MCS. But that was after 2 weeks of searching for someone closer to rebuild them and being told no. He does seemingly have the bastard child of their dampers, the 2 way non reservoir. He could not find anyone but MCS that would touch them.

As far as things I'd do differently, I'd try to get a set of StanceParts air cups for the front so I can get the front end up for driveways. Being an inverted design, the Penske struts have the reservoir hose out through the top shock shaft and adding the cups would require the system to be opened up and then rebleed when its all back together again. Not hard if you have the tools and nitrogen, I don't.

Those AirCups look pretty good actually. I would be concerned that they'd malfunction tho. Just my luck. lol

2 weeks for a rebuild is not terrible..... and I guess that remote reservoirs are easier to service. I'm going to reach out to Phoenix this week and see what their turnaround times are, as well as the time they'll need to have my car.

I'm one of those guys that love to save money when I can, but I'm also willing to pay for convenience, ..... or simply pay to avoid inconveniences. ...if that makes any sense.

For the MCS remote reservoirs, most people mount them up high in the wheel well or along the inner fender area. just make sure they’re clear of suspension travel and heat. Plenty of pics in the MCS install thread if you search for ‘remote reservoir location.’ Works great with GTR spring rates.
