2SS cup holder lighting problem

I noticed something strange yesterday morning with the ambient lighting. Note that I have the ambient lighting set to change depending upon driving mode. When I started the car for the first time in the morning, before work, I noticed that the cup holder light was orange. This is odd because the car was in sport mode and it should have been red. The door/screen ambient lighting was red as it should be. I pressed the driving mode button to set it for track mode and the door/screen light turned orange, as they should, but the cup holder light turned white. I kept cycling through the driving modes and it seems the the cup holder light is out of sync with the door/screen lights. I don't remember if I was able to get it to turn red with the car in touring mode or if it went out completely. I ended up setting the driving mode back to sport and left for work with the door/screen light red and the cup holder light orange. After driving for a couple of miles I noticed that the cup holder light had gone out but the door/screen lights were still on and red. When I left work yesterday evening the same thing happened. The cup holder light was orange and out of sync, then after a couple of miles it had gone out. I'll do some more troubleshooting today but has anyone experienced this before? I'm still under bumper-to-bumper warranty but I really don't trust the dealer service department to work in the interior without scratching/damaging something. I'd like to fix this myself.

It could be a simple software glitch, perhaps the state of spectrum lighting elements got out of sync with each other and the cupholder unit is one "step" behind the others. Before taking it to the dealer, I'd pull the battery for an hour or so, then reinstall it and see if a hard reset fixes it.

Update, I started the car this morning and the cup holder light did not illuminate. I went into the settings and tried setting various static colors and it would not light up. The door/screen lighting behaved normally. I think the cup holder light is toast. My cup holders never saw a cup so liquid infiltration can be ruled out. I guess the next step is to examine the wiring.

Great, P/N 84013236 shows as "unavailable" on the various GM parts sites. Sure hope this a loose wire or I'll be performing some component level circuit board repair.

I know you said you don’t want to take it to the dealer but if you mess something up you’ll be stuck with the lighting out in the cup holder. Strongly suggest taking it to the dealer for this. If they see you worked on it first they might not warranty it.

arpad_m,

That thought had crossed my mind but I don't really want to lose all my settings, radio, account, phone paring, PCM learned adaptations (not the right terms, but I know what I mean), etc. Yeah, I know that stuff is trivial, but I'd like to avoid it if possible.

m6-lt1,

I've had some horrific experiences with dealer service departments over the years. Bringing cars in for service and ending up with damage that is totally unrelated to what they were servicing, Thank you, but I'm good. Also, they will immediately blame my LED side markers, LED trunk bulb, and LED license plate bulbs, because that's obviously the problem, DON"T YOU KNOW?

Yeah well, none of that is the problem. They are the problem. Don't get me started...

So I hop in the car after work and the cup holder light is lit up orange again...IT"S ALIVE! I cycle the mode switch and it's out of sync again. After two minutes of driving I look down and it's now red, matching sport mode correctly. I cycle the mode button and the cup holder is now synced properly. I think "Yay, it fixed itself!". Two minutes later I look down it's off. Yeah, not fixed.

So we have a problem but it still has the ability to function as designed. This is either a loose connection of something electronic is overheating after a couple of minutes.

I'm not worried about messing it up worse as I do better work than the dealer and tread lightly. They'll never know I was in there. I know how to prevent witness marks on fasteners.

Ideally, I would have a replacement part in hand before pulling it apart but I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon. So I'm looking at tightening the loose connection or repairing the faulty circuit board. Fortunately, I have a Weller digital soldering station and a nice Fluke DMM. Anyone know if the car supplies 12V to this thing and it has an integral Vreg to knock it down to 5V or does the car provide 5V? Anyone have any pics of this board? I'd like to get a better idea of what I'm dealing with.

Many sources list 84013236 as unavailable. I found several that didn't and I acquired a new one just last week.

Corky,

Thanks for the pics, very helpful. So three wires, presumably +12V (red), ground (black), and data signal (white). The large chip is most likely communications. On the LED side, the mosfet, resistors, and small chip are probably the driver circuit.

His ZL1,

That's good news. I'll do some searching. I would much prefer to go into this with a new part in hand. Even if I manage to repair the faulty part it would be nice to have a new one on the shelf.

His ZL1,

I ordered one from www.gmpartscenter.net and the next day I received an email from them stating the part is backordered with no ETA, so they refunded the purchase. Where did your order yours from?

GM Wholesale Direct. You might look at:

I don't think it will be of any direct help but may be of interest?

Thanks for the info. GM Wholesale Direct now shows p/n 84013236 as backordered. This is crazy, my car is two years old and parts availability is already a problem. Guess I'll perform a more exhaustive search when I get some time this weekend. I was hoping to have the new part in hand when I pull the console out. Get it fixed, then see if I can repair the faulty part and have it for a spare.
